Messages to the Troops do make a difference

blog-message-to-the-troops-banner

I received my first messages of support when serving with the 1999 INTERFET coalition forces in east Timor. I also received similar messages when on ANZAC Day at Al Minhad Air Base (United Arab Emirates) and Kandahar in April 2009. The messages were in a book I saw in the common room area in AL Minhad and the brew area in Kandahar.

Message to the Troops - TelstraOne message that stands out was from a child. I can’t remember the exact words, but it said something like: “Thanks for being away from your family and risking your lives. We love soldiers.”

It made me think about my grandfather being killed at Tobruk and my mother as a 4-year-old with 7 brothers and sisters. It made me think about all the other soldiers’ families and my own 14 year-old daughter.

If you are thinking of sending a message this year, I would say “please send something” to you. They do get read and they mean a great deal to our deployed forces and their families. The troops do read them and also their families back home who tell their deployed loved ones about them.

If you would like to send a message to our service men and women you can send them a personal message of support.

Send a text to 0447 877 678* or post something on telstra.com/anzacday We’ll make sure they get it.

    Hi Guys and Girls,

With the ongoing nature of some of the campaigns our country is involved in, particularly Afghanistan, we can all too easily become complacent about the risk and the sacrifice you as our national defenders have undertaken on behalf of all of us.
Today at least, I think everyone in this country is thinking of you, hoping for your safety and expressing sincerest gratitude for your efforts and energies.
    Thank-you, a million times.
