I reasonate with the classification of a critic. interesting points raise.
what i’ve seen worked successfully is having a 3/4 “us” and 1/4 “me” approach to social media or any other sequential communication tools as part of a marketing strategy.
what do i mean by this? just bcos a business is in dentirstry doesnt mean every communication (podcaast, email, status udpate, tweet, newsletter, etc) has to be about them or their industry.
in fact, people aprpecaite off topic content that is engaging and fun – takes a load of their mind. jokes, reminders, interesting articles, 3 times a week has been proven to better received than content “from teh ceo’s desk”. in other words, humanise the business.
the more you show that there are real life people behind the business and not just a faceless entity, the more of a following you get.
again, the content needs to be meandingful to “us” and not just “me” wether is business related or off topic.
it cant be about tooting your own horn “xyz pty ltd has secured $5trillion contact with abc holdings as a joint venture”.
seriousty, who actually cares?ir ead BRW, fortune and if you go to linkedin profile, it’s clear i am business oriented but i as a student and practioner of business am more interested in the OUTCOME of a contract than the contract or it’s size.
Thanks for the links. I suggest that it gets mentioned in the podcast” you’ll find the links to teh forrester and other reseach mentioned in the podcast below”.
great work.
Hey Thanks Khalid. I like your 1/4 to 3/4 ratio. And thanks for the suggestion about pointing out the links. We will do that in future.
Cheers

How do I use social media? I only use LinkedIn. Why? Because I believe it might be useful in getting a job (being a contractor).
Other than that, I dont believe in the other social media websites, and I particularly have concerns about security of those sites. I dont trust my information with anyone, and no way would I willingly put anything as important (to me, anyway) in the hands of people that I’ve never met, and who in particular have a bad habit of security breaches to date.
Hi Rob
I totally get your point of view. It can be a bit scary putting it all out there. I hope LinkedIn is useful to you getting a job. Has it proved useful to date? I’d be interested in hearing about your experiences.
Cheers
Kristen
Hi Rob,
I use pen names + a different email address when it comes to social media – including linkedin.
u have a legitimate concern. there are algorithms today that can scan through social media sites to predict wehn you are going to the bank, which bank, what time, and how much will you withdraw. privacy is a major issue. it’s just big brother watching but corporations.
every time you press the “like” button, you will see ads based on what you have “liked” bcos your profile is on a certain list.
so yes. be careful what you share online. if you are goint to share something funny, change the names, place , time and date. or better yet, share someone else’s exereince (which is what most facebook users do anyway
)
Heres some news on Social Media which represents value. I am aware of a council and a not for profit partnering to create a social media hub for the provision of community services within a LGA – sounds like the perfect marraige of technology, social services and community services. It is the brian child of a council but it has been pulled together by the head of the Social Services Sector Gerard Vamadevan and his team in partnership with a leading corporate NFP – we hope it pulls together and will watch with interest for possibilities for others.
