T-Box introduces new free features including Apps and Weather

blog-t-box-picasa-games-banner

We know the Telstra T-Box is a great device and what is really exciting is the ability to make it even better by updating it with new features.

In recent times for example we’ve introduced the capability to pay for BigPond Movies on your Telstra bill and the option to connect T-Box to a Wi-Fi network without a password using Wi-Fi Protected Setup.

T-Box - Bigpond moviesWe’ve also been busy responding to your feedback by improving the way T-Box performs. For example we’ve improved remote control pairing, optimised the BigPond Movies service and improved the reliability of the broadband connection to the T-Box via Ethernet and Wi-Fi.

Today we’re bringing new features to the T-Box including a new Applications menu that includes free games and Picasa, as well as an on-screen weather icon.

Picasa is an application from Google that enables you to organise and share photos from your computer. And with the new T-Box Picasa app, customers will be able to log into their photo albums and share them on the big screen instead of crowding around the computer. Consider it as a modern day slide show.

We’re also adding a selection of free games to T-Box. From launch there will be eight titles to choose from including the puzzle game ‘Rockswap Adventures’ and a maths game called ‘add it up’. The games are free to use and do not count towards your download. We plan to add new games in the future so stay tuned for more news!

We know our customers also love to keep across weather updates so we’re bringing a weather icon to the Main Menu of your T-Box. You can change the weather postcode location by visiting telstra.com/tboxsetup, login and follow the instructions.

Click here to head to the FAQs that detail what you need to do to set up these great new free features on your T-Box.

We will be regularly introducing new features and improvements based on your feedback – so let us know what else you would like to see on your T-Box.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. We have been reading your comments with interest and after a few days have seen some common themes.

Many of you provided some great ideas for future T-Box features. The good news is that some of these suggestions are in development right now. As new features are about to launch we’ll let you know.

Some of you have also shared some of the issues you’ve been having with your T-Box remote and the T-Box itself. We certainly intend to deliver a working product to every customer. If you are experiencing any issue please call our dedicated Technical Support team.

One tip I want to provide anyone having issues with their T-Box is not to turn it off at the wall without first pressing and holding the power button on the remote. This will ensure the system powers off and resets correctly and protects the T-Box hard drive.

Some of you have also written that you can’t locate the weather icon. It should appear on the top right corner of the main menu screen. If it is not there then your T-Box may need a firmware update (https://help.telstra.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/19459/c/1986,1507,2351/r_id/130958 ) or you need to set your postcode in your T-Box account at http://www.telstra.com/tboxsetup.

We also provide support at http://www.telstra.com/tboxsupport and keep our FAQ’s up to date with recent issues we hear customers are having. If you think there are more areas of support you would like us to cover online, let us know.

    Kind regards, Daniel Kelly

    • Rob T says:

Daniel- nice to see you toeing the company line with mainly positive spin. How about giving some positive replies to the hundreds of comments sent in. No point in providing new features when the tbox performs well below expectations. The constant remote failures, reloading of Bigpond videos, freezing, slow movie downloads (and its not my WiFi), new release movies?? about 1 month behind local video store and store is the same cost, not that I bother but the games are crappy, like to watch AFL replays but screen freeze and reloading makes it painful. As for foxtel Im sure we will be locked into expensive bundles with mostly usless channels with adverts and loads of repeats. I belive Telstra rushed this product without thorough testing/evaluation. Expensive solution would be to replace all tboxes with ones that work as advertised. Expensive yes but thing of the positive feedback and good PR. I know that this is not realistic but why madly release new stuff when we know it will not work properly on the current tbox. Should have got a PVR or Tivo.

    • Robert says:

How about replying to the multitude of negative comments? All I see from Telstra is spruking about the the supposed advantages and features of the Tbox, all well and good if the thing worked as you promoted. Stop treating YOUR customers as idiots and at least try to fix all the existing issues of which there are many. I don`t expect a reply to this as it seems you are only interested in positive spin and promoting weather icon, foxtel blah blah blah. Daniel I do not expect an honest reply as you will most proberly get your arse kicked if you deviate from the company line. A friend of ours just got a free Tbox with his switch to Telstra about 2 weeks ago, of course it does not work as he was told at the T life store (and the remote died, I gave him one of my spares) he was told by your customer service to go and buy a universal remote!!!!!!!! Why should he, it is your weak product. I feel sorry for your staff who must take thousands of complaints a day. His Tbox is now gathering dust in the garage. Just a question- I recorded a program to USB which my brother in-law borrowed, his Tbox would not play it back, why? Should be able to play back on any box. All in all it is a very poor product at this stage.

    • Brendan - [Your Community Manager] says:

Hi Robert. I’m sorry to hear you and your friend have had a poor experience with the T-Box. Can I do anything to assist you? I’ve asked for a response for you from Daniel.

  2. Big Dave says:

I finally found where the weather is displayed.

Unfortunately the printing is too small / not clear enough to read from my couch on my good quality conventional TV.

My eye sight is aging a bit, but really I just need a bigger font.
There is plenty of screen space to do so.

Not all of us sit with our faces close up to the screen.

  3. Alfredo says:

Why would I want to get foxtel on the t-box when I can’t even watch the preview. I’m connect via WiFi every other device I have connect works except of my t-box. none of the broadband channels work and when they do it’s only for a few seconds and then freezes …. Help !

    • Brendan O'Keefe [T-EX Customer Engagement Manager] says:

Hi Alfredo. Sorry to hear you’ve been having a hard time with your T-Box. Please contact T-Box Technical Support on 1300 136 841 for assistance? They can advise you on your WIFI setup. Brendan.

    • Alfredo says:

Ok I’ll give it a go thanks

  4. Mario Micallef says:

Do Not like the power saving mode wish you make an off also, as if it is on one hour of power saving my tbox goes off while watching Tv program, and if you make it for more longer hours the tbox is still working even the tv is off as power still coming out from Usb still working in saving mode, cooling system on the Tbox not great gets hot, I use laptop cooler connected via usb but it stays on as the power still on when it is off, not like other top set boxes goes off as u switch it off, may be few bugs in the software but it is good set top box, cannot play media files from Usb like others but for the price well cannot complain.

  5. Daniel says:

I think the T-box should have a link that takes you to say the Abc Ivew, Plus7, SBS and fixplay (channel9) and other stations to watch shows that have pasted on TV due to the fact that you can only rec one show at a time and this will over come this problem and be better off for the T-box
    believe me i should know…

CAN YOU PLEASE LOOK IN TO THIS???

  6. James says:

Agree with others. Fix current issues first.

    1) tbox freezes (becomes unresponsive to remote) or reboots daily. Once rebooted will often go into HDD check. Using reset button now always go into setup mode (single press, not holding it down) so have to turn it off at the power.
    2) remote was unusable so got a logitech. When streaming or downloading a movie the tbox will not respond to IR remote (this is not a problem with remote). Often will have to wait for entire movie to download before tbox will respond to remote.

    • Daniel says:

Hi James. Thanks for your feedback, our priority is certainly on fixes. Your logitech remote issue is an interesting one we have not seen, I have passed this on to our Product team.

Please contact T-Box Technical Support on 1300 136 841 for assistance? They can advise on the other problems you are experiencing and replace the T-Box if necessary.

  7. terry leftwich says:

i have had a telstra t-box since they first came out. i love the sports channels. the internet tv is great. the fta dtv tuner section is lousy. i have spent nearly 12 months of pixelation and poor recordings with dropouts thru the recordings. i stopped using the dtv on the t-box. i read a forum saying the tuners are suseptible to all kinds of electrical interference. i recently reorganised my media cupboard and the t-box is well away from other electronic devices, so i put the aerial cable back on. at present it has been going good on all dtv channels for 5 hours. i hope this lasts. will report back in a few day and do some recordings.

  8. Jan Terese says:

Even with tbox #5, I still cannot get the Bigpoind channels. Every tbox has an issue and still waiting for the phone call follow up I was told to expect from a previous post here.

    • Brendan O'Keefe [T-EX Community Engagement Manager] says:

Hi Jan, Glad to hear back that Jash has organised a repacement T-Box and a credit. Brendan.

    • Jan says:

I actually decided to not get another TBox. I will get credited for the money I have paid out so far but that was the only compensation of 3 months of annoyance. Being disabled, I had to get help from someone else to connect/disconnect the TBox each time so it really was difficult with a lot of time wasted where I couldnt use it. I wish it had worked.

  9. Bathie says:

    Hi Telstra

Can you please tell me if anything is getting done about all the issues with the T-Box? all i see is alot of Telstra customers not happy with the device and NOTHING from Telstra to fix the problems? If or when T-Box gets Foxtel i will think twice about getting it… sorry make that i will not get it first up untill i get one week of good T-Box usage with out it restarting, remote not working, not recording, ect.

  10. salena says:

I’ve had out t-box that i was excited to get and was such a dissapointment. i got it for the hd channnels and to record, can’t dis that but, that is when my first remote would work for me. I eventually got e new remote that helped and works now, but the big pond channels, you tube, just don’t work nearly 99 %. I would usually have to disconnect modem for 10 or more seconds, then turn the t-box of/on if i want to make sure it will probably fix the problem for the day or so. Yes, every day to do this if yopu want to use the box completely. I was informed that the modem may need replacement as they said thomson modems have told telstyra there was something wrong with the modems(don’t understand what, but something) and said i will get new modem. now their saying the modems fine, will just get new t-box if the remote is not the answer to problems, I new that would be the case. I will say though, it is very sad and frustrating, but the people i speak to are very understanding and very willing to help most of the time. so, now i requested a new t-box today, and will see how it goes with the same modem….(they gave $20 movie voucher for problems)

  11. smadge1 says:

I’m a little disappointed that they still haven’t added iView to the T-Box yet. I bought it in the anticipation that it would be added in a timely matter, even if it’s metered. I would recommend it to anyone if it had iView. The Foxtel thing is enticing, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to afford it. Do we have any idea of how it’s pricing will be structured?

Finally, I’d like a full blown, recording schedule portal on the website. make it nice and easy to login to your account on the telstra website, pick the programs you wish to record, etc, and select which t-box if you have more than one. The built-in scheduling is pretty good, but ties you to the t-box.

  12. Mario Micallef says:

Sorry but my weather channel is still not showing my firmware is latest v5.230 February firmware checked via system info like you said but nothing there just says connected, on the top right hand corner I only see the time when I go and select a channel Icon and that’s all. My tbox not that old also, I even changed my Location to another to see if I see anything happen but still nothing..

  13. Rob T says:

T-Box is fast getting to the waste of time area. Some ongoing probs. listed below.
1- on my third remote which took 12 days to arrive, then I got two of them. Handy for when it will no doubt fail again. The support team suggested I buy a universal remote?? why should I it is their product which is not up to the task.
2- Bigpond channels constantly reloading (on WiFi about 8 metres away with only a plaster wall in the way).
3- Unit freezes which requires a reset.
4- Downloaded the latest Harry Potter (on 15/04/11) which took 2.5 hrs to download, and when played it kept freezing, went and hired it from the local video shop. Cost for this one movie= T-Box $5.99 ( unviewable), video shop $6.00. I will be taking this up with the support team.
Foxtel may be a good idea depending on the cost and user flexibility in choosing the channels. I have just about lost my patience with T-Box, the next trip for the box may well be to the rubbish bin or cermonial hammer attack in the back yard.
I could go on but I hear the kids yelling that the remote is not working!!

  14. David says:

Are you working on t-box supporting Android apps as the new Kogan stb does?

    http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/agora-internet-android-tv/

  15. Wanglese says:

I love the new NRL Game analysis app. My youngest Son and I soent an hour yesterday using it, and having huge amounts of fun with it.
No problems getting used to it, and no issues at all streaming.

    Still on our original remote……

  16. LA says:

I could love my T Box ….if it worked ALL the time…and if it showed the AFL games live. I got it because I was told that it showed live games. I’ve yet to see a live game and that’s really all I got it for. We rarely get a live game on free to air here. I would have been better getting Austar.

    • Daran says:

      LA

Under the current rights agreement all Live AFL and NRL games cannot be broadcasted over the internet.

  17. sambo says:

    Hi

I recently obtained a tbox with our new bundled plan which at first i couldnt believe as telstra usually has the most expensive plans, but the new bundles i think are excellent value for money. Especially when your on apprenticeship wages lol. So far i haven’t had anything BIG to complain about, i know the remote…. well sucks. Which is another reason im on here to find out if anyone is using a Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote with the tbox? If so how does it perform?
I did see a few people asking for subtitles for bigpond movies which i agree is a very good idea. Also it seems that a couple of movies are released each week and apparently there is 2000+ movies available, but the bigpond dvd rental services have 10times this amount. But i guess it isnt really a very big issue. Better value movies or a discount if multiple movies are rented. Come on guys you charge us for paying our bills with a credit card then a bill processing fee? That should should cover it. HD movies!!! a larger selection is a must. what is the point of a HDTV a decent home theater system to not take advantage of that?
Wireless N would be great to have on the wireless router that was with a bundle as there was no option to change from the low end 54g.

    • sambo says:

also to add one thing remove the stupid passcode to watch movies that are ma15 or r18, there should be an option to have it turned off all together. when you live in a house with people all over the age of 21 it seems a little redundant.

    • Marie says:

      Hear! Hear!

  18. Liam says:

Can you please tell me whether the AFL channel on T-box will be showing all games live in 2012 under the new rights agreement? The numerous comments on technical problems have put me off buying a t-box, but all AFL games live next year might make me try my luck with the t-box.

    • Michael says:

From the official announcement ALL AFL games will be streamed live to Foxtel on T-Box customers, and 1 game per week will be made available as a live stream to plain vanilla T-Box customers.

So unless you are paying extra for the Foxtel on T-Box, then the answer is no.

  19. Tony (Telstra Employee) says:

Can you get an AFL only Foxtel service? I don’t want the other stuff.

  20. Peter says:

Love the box but here are some of my wish lists:
    (1) as someone posted: turning off or power saving mode. At the moment, 8 hours is the highest
    (2) being able to access services without being on bigpond.
Maybe you should have a clause to your clients to agree to terms that the box will set up bandwidth since theyre not in an unmetered zone.
I will be happy for my tbox to download on my optus network (received this box as a giftmand I like it)
I would love to rent films if it would let me without being on bigpond network.

    • bombergino says:

do i understand that you are actually saying that you want to use a telstra product on the optus network, are you serious??that is like saying you want to drive a ford but with holden badges..seriously

    • mad_monkey says:

This kind of request is entirely valid.

Bigpond sells Music to bigpond and non Bigpond customers, except the Bigpond customer get a discount on the purchase and the downloads are un-rated.

Telstra should be providing a media service irrespective of the underlying network. Otherwise it cannot truly compete with the likes of HULU, FetchTV, Google and Apple. Of course it would make sense to provide a better and more fulfilling service if you were a complete Telstra customer.

  21. Nichole says:

Hi, i find the search box in the you tube app displays too small so when searching i have to stand right up tomy TV – any idea if a future update will be to make this search box bigger??

  22. john says:

hi – there is a lot of questions re i view but i can,t see any answers – will i view be coming to t box – if so when

  23. David says:

Are some movies encoded @ 60Hz while others are encoded @ 50Hz.

I tested on another television that I’ve got and connected with HDMI. Tested Critical Condition, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Bad News Bears with 1920x1080i @ 50Hz and I get the frame rate issue, slight pause with movement (stutter?) I change the settings to 1920x1080i @ 60Hz and it plays back fine.

Leaving it on 1920x1080i @ 60Hz introduces the frame rate problem in free to air television.

On the first television I have to connect it via component as it has HDCP issues with the T-Box, although the TV is HDCP compliant.

With the component connection it is not possible to change to 1920x1080i @ 60Hz.

This looks like something that Telstra should fix in a firmware update, if possible.

I have rented as well Marci-X and I am getting the frame rate issue. Playback at 60Hz on my other TV is fine. Changing to 50Hz, the frame rate issue is introduced.

  24. Marie says:

Have reluctantly come over to Telstra after many many years of steering clear. Seems like nothing has changed.

    1. Got my T-box just over a week ago and it has frozen up on me 5 times.

    2. I have the latest firmware yet I don’t see any weather on my main menu. I’ve even changed my postcode etc on the setup page and still nothing.

    3. The remote control is, shall we say, crappy. Have to press the buttons numerous times for it to respond.

    4. Bigpond movies – no subtitles??????????? Don’t you cater for deaf people. A bit archaeic, don’t you think.

    5. When viewing movies available to rent, after looking at 3 or 4 trailers, the box gets stuck accessing the internet.

All this after just one week – totally disappointed. Hoped things would have changed over the years……pfftttttt.

    • bombergino says:

nothing wrong with the remote mine works fine
2..subtitles if available can be turned on in settings,i use them with movies no problems.
      3..access to the internet=your connection
4…the fact that a majority of users do not have any issues means that either your other equipment is not of a high enough standard or you are just unlucky, but nothing wrong with the box thats for sure

    • Tim says:

@ Bombergino We are talking about subtitles for paid movi downloads… there are not so yes you would have a problem if you tried to use them on a dowloaded movie as they don’t exist.

    • Marie says:

@bombergino…as stated by Tim, I’m talking about paid movies. There are no subtitles.
Nothing wrong with your remote…..well you’re one of the lucky ones.

Access to the internet=your connection….wrong, three of us can access internet on ipad, laptop and iphone while T-Box just hangs.

I guess there’s a hell of a lot of us who are “unlucky” then.

    • Marie says:

UPDATE: The weather has now appeared on my menu, yay!

  25. Ck says:

I know this is slightly off topic of remotes. .. but after the most recent update, my EPG (program guide) is not working at all.
Recordings have been lost (very annoyed) due to resetting the darned box trying to fix these issues. I won’t go on about my complete avoidance of Tech Supp. by phone due to their inability to comprehend the simplest of issues, apart from resetting, trying both wifi and ethernet connection and the likes. Does one anyone else have this issue, or has anyone found a resolution?

    Ck – on 2nd tbox.

  26. Robert Tragin says:

How about some action on then multitude of issues with the very poor Tbox? I have posted on the following dates 9 & 18 April & 20 May with problems on my Tbox, which I wont bore you with relisting. Still waiting for fixes and some answers. Have not used the Tbox for a while so I gave it a go the other day to see if it had magically improved. Bigpond video of the AFL channel reloads about every 10-20 seconds making it unviewable, got a movie 2.5 hours to download. Fixed this problem by turning off modem for 30 seconds (have to do this each time we get a movie) it is a Motorola modem and has no other probs connecting with other devices. Has Telstra lost the dictionary with the meaning of customer service ?????
As far as Foxtel goes NOT A HOPE of getting it as I have no faith in the Tbox performance let alone the overpriced packages which will be offered. Her is an idea Mr Telstra, how about say $50 or more free movie vouchers for all who have posted several complaints and recieved no reply? It may help to ease the pain of being sucked in to purchase the Tbox. Do not bother to reply with the standard positive spin about weather icon apps etc. JUST FIX the existing problems!!!
A very dissapointing product but with potential if the issues are attended to in a prompt manner. I do not expect Telstra to care to much about their customers so long as the $$$$ keep rolling in.
    Regards- Robert

  27. bombergino says:

i have no idea what some of you are talking about…i have a series 6 58 inch full hd samsung and i have not encountered any of the problems some people are encountering..my big pond runs at high speed(30mb constant) and i have no issues with anything freezing or any download issues as i am downloading most movies in around 5-6 minutes,as for people complaining about power save feature seriously 8 hours is just fine and for those who claim that the box goes into stand by during programs….IMPOSSIBLE….i suggest that the majority of complaints rests with peoples equipment and not the box at all…i know of two other people with tboxes and decent equipment and they have no issues either…..T BOX ROCKS……..

    • Robert says:

Work for Telstra do you? There are to many common issues with the Tbox to suggest we all have faulty equipment other than the Tbox. My last post still has not made it to this forum, maybe I was to close to the truth for Telstra to comment or better still to actually act on the issues.

    • Hi Robert. Your post is here and I’ve asked for a call for you.

    • Rob says:

I agree.. I have no issues with the T-Box.. luv it!!

  28. Aaron Finch says:

Two things you gotta get sorted…

Iphone app that works as a remote as the one provided with the box is extreamly cheap and had to enter words in. Iphone wireless remote would be very cool.

Stream content from wireless devices to the tbox. I have movie content on my phone or some music, i should be able to stream this content to the tbox.

    Cheers…

  29. tony barnett says:

i have had th t-box now for a few months intially i was told i would not get the stuttering on bigpond channels that i was getting on the computer (connected to modem by ethernet cable)before i got the t-box but i did when i had t-box connected via wifi to router i went to “cheap as chips” a discount store in adelaide paid $15.00 for a 15m ethernet cable and connected it the problem disappeared. problems recently had programs not recording,t-box not turning it self off after setting it for 8hr, some problems with remote not responding rang up to today told to reformat hard drive and they are sending out a new remote i have not tried to download a movie yet but other than that it has not been to bad hoping that further upgrades of software may solve some of these problems in the future.i also have a TIVO on another tv which is pretty good but had to pay bigger dollars for that.i will be interested to find out how Foxtel on T-Box will go as far as price and standard of viewing hope we can try before we buy?

    • tony barnett says:

oops spoke to soon yesterday had to ring help line 3 times and we reformated hard drive reset epg options, reset back to factory settings hoping it may solve problems but i went to record 3 shows via epg page lastnight recorded one fully second one recorded only 5 mins of the show i was after and third one not at all. 2 and 3 were one after the other so i made sure that start and finish times did not clash by starting at right time and finish of the programon prior was not interferring with start of 3 program. what are my options now as the bloke from support said we reset all we could.
      anybody have any ideas

    • Hi Tony. I’m sorry to hear the reformat and other bits didn’t help. I’ve asked a T-Box product specialist to give you a call as soon as possible. Brendan

  30. John Boy says:

Telstra please answer the questions listed numerous times in the past. When will iView, FixPlay & Plus7 come to T-Box and why the internet channel stuttering issues even when WiFi is working????

    • John Boy says:

Great to see that Telstra are being LAX & SILENT again! Simple question should have been simple to answer, but NO!

  31. brod says:

My t Box is brand new and i cannot get it to hook up through wifi.My modem is a thomson TG782t. i have spoken to tech support but they are no good. Last time i spoke to them they said someone will contact me in 5 days to try to help out.
The modem is only 5m away and every other wifi device works fine at further distances. Can anyone help with this issue.
    Thanks

  32. Donna says:

I would also like to see subtitles/captions supported in T-Box Bigpond Movies. Two of my three children wear hearing aids and rely on subtitles/captions to get the most from movies.

As my husband and I get older our hearing is also dropping so we are also relying on subtitles/captions more and more.

    Enjoying the T-Box so far.

  33. tony says:

g,day again i enjoy my t-box when it does as it should and looking forward to what may come.i received my 2nd t-box the other day but it has just started to do exactly what the other did eg remote intermittenly not working recorded a show from epg menu turned of tv not t-box went to check the recording but remote did not work so had to reset/unplug to get into the menu and found that the 30min program was i think still recording nearly up to 2 hours from orginal start of program.rang help line they are going to investigate either by sending me another t-box or giving me a ring they also asked if i had done the reset options etc which i had done.Is there a problem with the software??? If there is please fixit beacause i dont thing sending me another t-box will do anything except cost you the return mail.if you want to use me as a guinnea pig for software updates i am happy i just want to have something that does as it should

feel free to email me with a resolution .

    • Hi Greg. I’ve asked a local rep to call you as soon as possible to discuss your options. Brendan

i know how you feel greg you get something and you want it to do what it should.i am on my second t-box and looking at some other discussions i am lucky. just keep ringing them up,i am starting to have same problem as first one.i am hoping it will be fixed as some of the problems are intermittent i am also hoping further updates of software will fix problems we can only hope.it will be interesting to see how things go with foxtel on t-box for ADSL goes i see they are trying cable people first

I’ve been monitoring all the comments about how bad the T-box is and was afraid to respond in case I mozzed myself. The fact is after a very traumatic time moving to Bigpond and getting my T-box up and running, I’m pretty happy with it. I agree it’s not perfect but I for one am glad I bought it and persisted with the initial problems.

Yes, I had to format my 1TB USB drive to Fat32, but it works and I now have stacks of programs that I need to find time to watch.

Yes, it’s also true that the T-box is not smart enough to know when you’ve recorded the same program more than once, but it’s manageable and at least I can now adjust the start and finish times to make sure I have the full program.. even when the stations choose to change times in spite of their customers.

I also had a problem watching the Bigpond channels especially TVN and when I contacted Telstra about it, it seems my firmware on my router was out of date and after they updated it, I have not a had a problem with watching live race meets (fingers crossed).

I really enjoy the AFL analyser especially watching the replay of all those awesome goals that Collingwood kicks in the last quarter.

Finally one of the biggest complaints I’ve seen is not having the ability to record two shows at once, given the T-box has two tuners. I for one don’t see that as a disadvantage because I really appreciate having the ability to pause and rewind the current channel I’m watching. I even discovered that the T-box seems to be recording the current channel even if you’re not watching it. I can pause, even for an hour or so, then come back to the show and watch it and fast forward the ads. This is magic and is streets ahead of just being able to record two channels at the same time.

In summary, the T-box isn’t the greatest thing going but it is nowhere near as bad as some of the comments imply. I will not be giving up my T-box and expect it to provide some pretty smart TV in the future.

In answer to all the questions, no I do not and never have worked for Telstra and in fact have taken them to task on a number of occasions. I just felt I had to add some balance to the generally negative comments.

I have had some issues with my T-box initally, but now it has settled down and for the most part is working fine. I was wondering if it is possible to include software for internet radio. I know it is already in the T-hub, so why not include it into T-Box. I have my T-Box connected via my home theatre system to enjoy the downloaded movies, now I’d like to enjoy listening to Internet radio with the better sound through my system as well. Any comments?

    • Wanglese says:

The idea of streaming Internet Radio via the T Box is a great one.
Like you, I have everything connected up via the home theatre amplifier.

  37. tony says:

just wondering as mentioned prior on to my second tbox mainly having problems with recording side of things it will either keep on recording or it doesn,t a little annoying. the main time i have problems is when i have the TV off when recording i have tbox connect via HDMI cable does any body else? i have spoken to tbox support and they said they hope to have updates fix this problem shortly was thinking about changing it to componnet plugs/av connections does anybody else have problem with that type of connection before i change it

    • tony says:

forgot to mention when i go to the tbox to check the recording that i have chosen from EPG menu after the due time the remote wont work and have to reset to open the menu and i can tell before that the recording either has gome over the time or not at all.support did say they will change tbox but i said no until it gets as bad as 1st one

  38. Robert says:

I see foxtel is now on tbox. Why can it not be subscribed to if the box is running on wifi? My modem has only 1 port which is running the pc. Still having trouble watching bigpond videos (constant reloading). Bigpond movies are not cheap and the “NEW RELEASES” are many months behind the local video shop. Still takes 2-3 hours to download movie unless the modem (motorola) is unplugged for about 30 seconds then it takes about 20 minutes to download. Went through all the fixes with cust service and it was ok for a while, I think they provide a good service for a below average product.

    • tony says:

robert i have thomson modem tg 782t 4 ethernet port $99 from telstra shop i was having trouble watching Bigpond TV constanly stop and starting when using WIFI but i picked up from “Cheap as Chips” a 15 metre ethernet cable for around $15 layed it around furniture etc to TBOX and it stopped i also had TIVO connected via WIFI and got some network problems nothing like what i was getting on Tbox so connected that as well.Must admit though you can see and feel the difference in both PVR,S you get what you pay for. I am hoping future updates to the tbox will hopefully fix a lot of the issues and problems.

    • Wanglese says:

Robert, you have a single port modem?
Are you using “internet sharing” so the T-Box can see the internet via the PC?

As for why we can’t see Foxtel via WiFi, it’s worse than that, as I understand it, at the moment,we can’t get it unless we are on Cable, AND in a non Austar area.

The second caveat annoys me, because it’s actually unfair restraint on the customer to protect media companies from being competitive, though this may change now that Foxtel is effectively buying Austar.

The First, my guess is that Telstra is being rightly careful because poor speed delivery would not benefit either brands.

For myself, I get great streaming from Bigpond, Youtube and all the rest works fine, with no stuttering (I had the modem firmware upgraded), so I’d be willing to take a chance on Foxtel to see how well it can be delivered. My own view is I’d be happy to try it out o the caveat thjat delivery may not be as good as with Cable (or NBN).
      (That’s a hint Telstra guys).

As for the prices of the movies – yeah a tad expensive, though the prices may drop with the new arrangements Telstra announced with some movie company?

I only tried out one of the “Free movies” and it worked fine.
BTW, 20 minutes to download a movie? Do you mean the full movie, or enough to start playing it?

  40. Leslie says:

    Dear Product Development Team,
I would like to know if you have any plans to have the T-Box certified for Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA). As the T-Box is already Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), or I assume it is, it would solve many problems that exist right now. By up-grading the T-Box to become an interface for DLNA, people would not have to buy new flat panel screens with this capability. There are many flat panel screens in homes and businesses around Australia which are not DLNA certified. It is too wasteful and expensive to throw away these screens, when there is a way to incorporate the DLNA technology into the T-Box and use it as an interface. I have been looking for a suitable way to stream videos from my PC to my flat panel screen. Also to be able to show pictures stored on my phone and other devices via my home network. T-Box would be the perfect answer without me having to buy another device and trying to find a spare input into my flat panel screen. There are more than 250 brands which have joined the alliance, so please let the Telstra T-Box be the next.
So come on Telstra Produce Development Team, become a leader in this new technology, not a follower. Don’t be left behind. Once people know that other devices can be an interface for the DLNA technology, they will not look at the T-Box as a desirable product if it is not DLNA certified.

  42. Rick says:

I have had a tbox for 6 months now and have had no trouble whatsoever. I think the remote is excellent. I also think that the tbox is very easy to use.

  43. Rick says:

Excellent product – very intuitive to use. Remote is terrific.

  44. LA says:

Can someone please fix my TBox. I keep ringing the help line and they are great…fix it every time, but I’m ringing weakly. Everything works except it keeps trying to connect to the internet to watch the V8s. My internet is perfect. I’m so over the whole product. The concept is brilliant, but the performance is shocking.

  45. Daran says:

Well after weeks of constant calls and constant problems and after 3 T boxes I will be returning this back to Telstra.

Way too buggy for my liking

  46. Steve says:

    Hi
our T Box goes into standby mode after about four hours…even if we’re still watching TV! it’s very frustrating and there is nothing in the pdf file about how to stop this…
would REALLY appreciate some help here
    thanks

    • LA says:

Mine does that as well. It’s easily fixed.

Click the little ‘back’ button on the remote. (curved arrow) and go back to what you were watching.

I also think I’ve fixed the “loading internet channel” problem. Turn it all off and unplug everything.
      Replug it all.
      Turn on.
      Repeat three times (at least)
      Voila!!!

The help line explained it all to me, so try that if anyone is having that problem…..saves a phone call.

    • tony says:

steve you did not mention if you have tried changing it to 8hrs via the settings on tbox it is quite easy

    • tony says:

sorry for the delay getting back re changing it from 4hrs to 8hrs i had to check myself
go to Menu button, settings and then time zone should be up you will see some settings bottom left hand corner go through those till you get to power saving mode and in there you will find the different time limits hope this fixes it if you havent found it yet

  47. chelsee says:

  48. Steve says:

Thanks LA…but when it goes into standby…nothing works on the remote…not even the back arrow.
Tony, thanks for your response…I have gone into settings but can’t find where to set to 8 hours. Is it under the ‘reset’ options?
can you be specific where to find it ? :-)
    cheers

The Software in the Tbox is Great, bought from a French software house I have heard, but Telstras decision to put it on cheap crappy , and i mean crappy hardware will cost Telstra a fortune in bad PR and replacement units.

  50. alan says:

God in charge of the T-box And Especially the T-hub, you certainly picked the short straw when you got of the plane from NZ.
