2009 Telstra Ballet Dancer Award winner

It’s almost been a year since the announcement that I had won the 2009 Telstra Ballet Dancer Award and 2009 Telstra People’s Choice Award; what an incredible night it was!

The night itself was a blur of excitement and shock. I remember hearing my name being called as the winner of the Telstra People’s Choice Award and I felt so humbled because it is voted by ballet fans over the course of the entire year. This was really special because it meant I had reached out to the public through my dancing, and to me, that is one of the most incredible parts of being a professional dancer.

Then when it was announced that I had won the Telstra Ballet Dancer Award too I think I nearly fell over from the shock! It was such an honour to be recognised in this way and it will be an experience I will always treasure. There wasn’t really much time for it to sink in before media called and photos were to be taken. I spoke from my heart and it was a very special night to be a part of.

After celebrating with the whole company, I went home and called my parents. I had told them not to worry about coming because I didn’t think I would win; so I called them straight away and I wished I had told them to come! We had two shows of ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ the next day so I remember going to sleep still buzzing but exhausted from the emotion of the whole night.

I would like to thank Telstra for their continued support of both this Award and The Australian Ballet. As a dancer, to be recognised on this level is very humbling and we wouldn’t have this acknowledgement without the support of Telstra. I wish the 2010 Award winners all the best and would just say to them to enjoy the moment, but always stay true to who you are and what you believe in.

The 2010 Telstra Ballet Dancer of the Year and the Telstra People’s Choice Award will be announced onstage, after the opening night performance of The Nutcracker on Friday 3 December. Six dancers from The Australian Ballet are vying for the top honour and the $20,000 first prize; learn more at www.telstra.com/ballet
