Android 2.2 (FROYO) and Telstra’s HTC Desire: OTA now available

blog-froyo-2-2-update-android-banner

HTC Desire has become that little bit more desirable with the release this week of new software that introduces the latest Google Android™ operating system to the popular smartphone.
The new operating system, called Android 2.2, unleashes some great new features including:

  • A portable Wi-Fi hotspot mode where you can share HTC Desire’s mobile broadband connection with Wi-Fi enabled devices in close proximity.
  • 720p resolution video recording (up from WVGA quality)
  • New widgets: Calculator Widget, FM Radio Widget, Market Widget
  • The ability to store apps on external memory
  • New setting options including being able to independently change ringtone, media and alarm volume.

We know many of you have been hanging out for this update for some time and we appreciate everyone’s patience while we worked with HTC and Google to test and release it. The release means HTC Desire on the Next G™ network remains one of the most advanced Android smartphones available in Australia – and one of the only phones to feature the latest OS from Google.

Why did it take so long?

Each major Android software release is almost as much work as releasing a new device, requiring HTC, Telstra and Google’s approval.  Unfortunately in this instance we were also held back by some unforeseen delays in HTC’s testing schedule.

Froyo Update 2.2Some people have speculated that Telstra’s own apps and links pushed the release timeframes out. To set the record straight, the testing of Telstra’s integrated apps and services added zero additional time to the release schedule. The bulk of our testing relates to making sure the phone with its upgraded software performs at its best on the Next G™ network — including ensuring customers get the best possible coverage performance and data speeds.

These are the things we know you care about and we’re pleased we’ve finally been able to make the fully-tested update available.

How to upgrade

Over the air

  • This is the easiest way to upgrade HTC Desire to Android 2.2 software. The over the air update also allows you to upgrade without wiping your current data.
  • Because it is a large update (92.75MB), we strongly recommend using a home Wi-Fi connection. Mobile Data charges will apply if the software package is downloaded via the Next G™ mobile network. If you download via a mobile connection while you are on international roaming then international data charges will apply and this is not recommended.
  • Prior to requesting the update, make sure you have 25MB free on your phone’s internal memory to accommodate the update. To check this, go to Settings>SD & Phone storage, this will show the amount of internal storage available.
  • To request the OTA update, on your phone press the Menu hard key and go to: Settings>About Phone>System software updates>Check now.

ROM update

  • Customers can download a compete replacement software package for their Desire from HTC’s website.
  • Customers will need HTC Sync 3.0 installed on their PC before commencing the upgrade.
  • This software download contains the complete updated software package for the device (also known as a ROM). The package is over 100MB and should be downloaded to a PC before being installed onto the HTC Desire via the bundled USB cable using HTC Synch software.
  • Customers are advised to follow HTC’s step by step instructions closely and backup, on an external device or memory card, their data which will be wiped in the upgrade process.

Ok so I have downloaded the file OTA to my phone (in fact twice now) and nothing is happening how do I install the file was expecting it to auto start what do i do?????

    • Mykal (Telstra Empoyee) says:

      Hi Kylie,

      From your comment I think you may have downloaded the file from a website in the browser on the phone. Instead try;

      MenuKey>Settings>About Phone>System software updates>Check Now

(probably best over WiFi to save on your data usage)

Hope you enjoy your FroYo ;)

    • david says:

This is the wrong spot but when is the froyo update coming (if at all) for Samsung Galaxy S i9000 T. For some reason when you call Telstra about the issue it always makes the to-hard basket.

As a customer all i want is a simple Yes or No to the question “Is it ever going to happen” please can anyone answer a simple question ? I know asking this next question will be like asking whats in coca cola but it is is coming when ??? thanks in advance
      Cheers
      David

  2. StuartGW says:

Is anyone else having problems with the wifi hotspot?
My laptop (Win 7) will connect to the phone but it reports limited connectivity with no internet access.
    Diagnosis indicates:
‘Problem with wireless adapter or access point’ and
‘Wireless Netwaork Connection doesn’t have a valid IP configuration.

    • Jon says:

I tested the hotspot out last night, and it worked fine :) . Of course I disabled it quickly, in fear of nasty data charges.

    • Jason says:

      I agree.

I downloaded and installed the Froyo update.

Switched off my home wireless router, fired up my NextG connection to the web on my phone, all good.

Next I switched on the the wi-fi hotspot on the HTC Desire, it said wireless hotspot active.

Then I tried to connect my laptop to it…….nothing.

      Kept saying failed to connect.

Now i use my laptop in all wireless hotspots, work wireless, etc, and all work fine.

So now I’m stuck with a wi-fi hotspot phone that doesn’t accept connections?

Oh well, another example of technology that Telstra has stuffed up.

I’m sure if they released the Android update to the HTC Desire without all the additional Telstra crap’s, I mean “apps”, and also removed all the Telstra locks on the device it would have no trouble working.

I’m so glad I fork out good money for a “locked down” device with only 80% of the features accessible…..and don’t get me started on their billing system!!

    • bondsan says:

      Hi Stuart,

Try ensuring that you have set up the specifics of the connection before getting a laptop to connect to it. Don’t forget to use WPA2-AES as the most secure and use a password made up of numbers and letters.

I did this and mine worked fine afterwards.

Also, is your windows 7 laptop picking up the hotspot? Where is it failing? Does it seem to get an IP address? Sometimes it is the wireless on the laptop as well (even if it works on other hotspots). Sometimes disabling the wireless on the laptop and reenabling it can help out.

Just a suggestion to help you out.

    • StuartGW says:

Bondsan, all fixed now thanks. See comment below. It was because DHCP was switched off, which in turn eas because I wad using Switchpro widget to turn on the hotbot. It’s a known bug in switchpro but the standard widget works fine.
      Thanks for the response anyway.
      Cheers Stuart.

  3. Vlad says:

I have reinstalled the the update a number of times and I have discovered quite a few bugs in the software. I have notified HTC so hopefully something is being done about this. There are issues with the bluetooth, gps, privacy settings, restore option, and the OS crashing randomly.

  4. Edward says:

    I’ve just updated my Desire as well but I refer to the comment;

“Mobile Data charges will apply if the software package is downloaded via the Next G™ mobile network.”

Does this mean it comes out of the included data allowance in your plan or it is charged on top of this regardless?

    Thanks

  5. Ria says:

Downloaded update OTA, started the install, but once it switched off it now won’t reboot just continually switches on and off on its own. I’ve pulled the battery but still no good. Anyone else having the same issue?

    • StuartGW says:

I had this problem randomly with my phone a while ago (with 2.1) I ended up taking it in to a Telstra store. They sent it away and it came back ‘fixed’ with a firmware upgrade.

    • David says:

I had the same problem with 2.1 on my HTC Desire. Returned the phone to Telstra. After 3 weeks it came back with an apparent motherboard replacement. I tested it at the store as soon as I got it but guess what?? It had the same problem. So the guy at the store upgraded it to 2.2 but it did not help. Now the phone has gone back for a fix and I’ll probably sit another 3 weeks without a phone. Pathetic. They didn’t even test the fix before saying it was “fixed”. I keep paying my monthly fees for a phone I don’t have. They gave me a pathetic old LG phone on loan while my Desire is being “fixed”……arghhhhhhhhh

  6. Mark says:

Downloaded and installed 2.2 OTA without any apparent problems until I tried in-car bluetooth. The phone shows as pairing and connecting but there is no response on the in-car system. The car’s three weeks old. Any ideas

  7. Brendan (Telstra Staff) says:

    Hi Edward,
See my instructions i posted on 29th October on how to manually apply the OTA by downloading the file to your computer first. This way you don’t have to use up your download limit.
    Regards,
    Brendan

  8. baloor says:

    @j
    @Farken

Another undocumented issue that remains absent from both HTC and Telstra update instructions.

HTC Synch works fine on all flavours of Win7 and is in fact required for the full RUU update.

However, what has NOT been mentioned and clearly needs to be addressed both here officially and on the HTC update instructions is that Win 7 will, upon first encountering the HBoot, look to Windows Update for device drivers, prior to checking the local system.

It will at this point download and install the generic Android 1.0 device driver which causes the issues.
You can either manually change the driver used. Not for the technically challenged or those with limited PC skills. (Google is your friend, the wider internet has plenty of info, hence the troubling lack of documentation from HTC and Telstra)

    Or
    1. Select the alert bubble advising of driver installation and click the \Don’t check Windows Update\ option, and the PC will happily install the working HTC drivers installed with HTC Synch.
    2. Prior to runing the update, disable Windows Update driver checks (System Properties-> Hardware-> Device Installation Settings) when new devices are installed. So the system immediately chooses to install the required HTC driver.

  9. wade says:

While using usb tethering(internet sharing), connection is unstable and is going at slower speeds. Any solutions?

  10. Jason says:

Yeah I updated my Desire, now the signal is so much worse. I hope they bring something out to fix this.

    • Jon says:

My signal seemed to be lower too. I used to get 1-2 bar from my bedroom, it’s been down to 0 bar since the upgrade. I’m not sure how this could be as the upgrade obviously doesn’t affect the physical reception properties of the phone. Perhaps it’s a bit of an Apple fix, whereby the original reception shown was higher than there really was, and we’re now seeing the true reception.

    • Dave says:

Same here. I think its a telstra thing.

  11. Since the upgrade embedded flash video streaming on a webpage no longer works and I am unable to scroll flash websites when tilted to landscape. This is all necessary for my business presentations.

Please can I have a roll back – downgrade path?

I am sorry I ever upgraded and made things worse. HTC advised me to do a factory reset and that would fix the drivers –

I did this, lost all of my settings and applications and it still did not fix anything, now the Telstra – HTC supoort line is not taking calls, I am waiting for them to call me back.

Please can I have a roll back – downgrade path?
Please can I have a roll back – downgrade path?
Please can I have a roll back – downgrade path?

  12. Jason says:

My wife followed the Desire’s prompts for an update last Saturday and followed the prompts. The phone crashed after the download. HTC advised me to take the phone back to the dealer who then sent it for repairs. We bought both our phones on 10 August 2010. Not good enough Telstra. I e-mailed Telstra complaints asking them to expedite the repairs and have not even had a courtesy response. Not good enough Telstra. Subsequently I have not upgraded to Froyo.

  13. Vaughan says:

Hi, I update to 2.2 and I currently cannot use WiFi and log onto web sites. I have spent numerous hours on the phone to HTC with limited assistance and poor phone lines to Manila. After doing a hard reset of the desire and determining that fault still exists, simply advised to take the phone to Telstra. I have gone greyer than I was already. Does anyone have any sugestions.

  14. mark says:

I team, just downloaded the HTC update via the update now menu & updated fine. But now I can no longer sync mail etc with the company exchange server, keeps asking me to enable security policies and when I select ok nothing happens & the phone freezes. Any ideas what’s up?

  15. Peter says:

followed all the instructions, updated ok but now cannot browse at all. settings for wireless & networks has the “mobile network ticked and Turning on… but it is greyed out. tried all the usual turn on/off, battery out etc but no good…. any ideas?

  16. bernardpotatoe says:

I have >600 contacts in the phone memory and cannot set individual ringtones to them, only if I copy them to the sim card. Any help?

  17. Graham says:

Do you have to do the ROM update if you’ve done the OTA update ? – is there any advantage either way if not

  18. StuartGW says:

No-one seems to be reporting success or otherwise with the wi-fi hotspot feature. Does that mean no-one is trying it, or it’s working fine for you all. I cant get it to work at all.

    • StuartGW says:

OK. I figured it out (in case anyone else has the same problem)
I went into advanced settings (press menu while in basic hotspot settings)
Then chose LAN settings and switched on DCHP.
      Worked for me!

    • StuartGW says:

      Sorry. I meant DHCP

  19. David P says:

I’ve tried downloading the update a few times via PC and wi-fi, each time it says data corrupt. Can anyone tell me if there are any problems at the moment with this download?

  20. Jono says:

I still cant get the foxtel app to work.

I select it, screen goes black momentarily, then goes back to the home screen….

    help?

  21. I am also having bluetooth and many other issues after the upgrade – but why are we bothering to tell each other, Telstra and HTC seem very silent on all of our issues,

Just keep taking our money guys, no need for integrity anymore, just get a dividend for your shareholders!!

  22. David says:

Hey everyone, I just upgraded my software on my HTC Desire to Android’s new Froyo 2.2 but after it was complete, it no longer recognizes my SD card. I’ve tried switching the phone off, removing the card then inserting & turning it back on again but every time I do that, it comes up on the screen with ‘SD card now safe to remove’. Has this happened to anyone before? And can anyone help please? I really hope that I haven’t lost any of my photos. If anyone can help I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

  23. Jason says:

Hi, seem to have come across a bug in 2.2. After disconnecting from a wireless access point, the mobile data connection does not seem to come back on automatically.

If i go to settings and turn the mobile network option off and then on, it the picks up the mobile data connection again.

Has anyone else come across this issue?

  24. Jason says:

I’ve done the OTA upgrade. It has problems. I had to manually set APN details to get the internet working.

Now only some internet features work. Gmail works, FB works, Maps work , however market place, telstra apps, search from both sensis and google don’t work. This is strange.

Where can I get this fixed?

    Thanks

  25. mars says:

Did the OTA upgrade, all went well. My only complaint is that the menu button no longer can be used to unlock screen, it was a handy option in 2.1. But everthing else is better, especailly the ability to move apps to SD card.

  26. Kurzweilfreak says:

To all the people complaining about the 2.2 update (OTA or through HTC sync) – I’m very happy with the stability using CyanogenMod 6.0.1 (2.2 based mod) – google it to find out more. I’m using hotspot with no issues daily for my work and have never had a more stable Android phone.

  27. sanjay says:

I would like to know if I can update my HTC desire Rom update. Only problem is that its a non branded desire bought outrite from UK running on 3 network Australia . I did an OTA update to 2.2 but I want to update my Rom .

  28. Christopher says:

I did the OTA upgrade and thought everything was OK until I tried to use Sygic Maps GPS app. Won’t run.
Then I tried to go to Market and it won’t run.
Just says “An error has occurred. Please try again later.”
Those are the only ones that won’t function so far.
Any ideas on how to get Market going again?
I’ll try removing and re-installing Sygic Maps.

    • GrassyNoel says:

Yes, where is it? Months have gone by since Froyo was released, in fact Gingerbread is available to civilised countries.

    • Froyo says:

OPTUS and VIRGIN have managed to release it where is up to on this? Hi Brendan. Can you please email me more information via this form so I can better understand the situation. Thanks.

  32. YP says:

Just did the OTA froyo update over wi-fi – but now my android market icon no longer connects – “an error has occured”

Has anyone else encountered this? How do i fix it?

    Please help

    • YP says:

Found my own solution – Background data was turned off – turned it on and android market now works – phew

  33. Matt says:

Set htc desire to use home wifi. zero packet sent and rebooted wifi router, phone cut back to 3g and now over quote from the download. Also OTA failed.

Had to go back to the manual method which worked fine.
When will telstra stop giving such low quotas, fingers crossed the bill won’t be to big

  34. david says:

Ok, Im officially frustrated. you guys at telstra are great, you call and email. Brilliant!
Only thing is with this phone. My first HTC Desire is great now, after it seemed to download the upgrade. A message came and said Telstra upgrade available, I clicked it and it went through, asked if I wanted to run, yes, boom, good phone, even has a flashlight now. Lets talk about phone number 2. My PA uses this one in our business, I need a PA because Im not details orrientated. I gave her the phone and it has never worked properly from the box. It has the old system. i have written here plenty of times regarding this. Angus has called and asked me a few questions, Just for the record. The hone runs on turn on and comes up to the normal screen. its goes through the telstra page, then the finger touches the sky page, then the front page which says “limited Service” then its starts to have service and then the front page proper. Then it goes black and then back to the telstra page and then cant be turned off or on . you need to remove the battery. Tehn it will restart and buzz 7 times and vibrate, then off. it has worked last week for about 4 days. Today the telstra upgrade was waiting but the when I started the download the phone went off. Answers?

  35. Martin says:

    Hello,

I had received notification of this update a while back and didn’t download it. I would like to download the OTA update for my HTC Desire now, but when I check for updates via the ‘About phone’ section it says my phone is up to date (it doesn’t matter whether I check via 3G or Wi-fi). I haven’t downloaded the package previously and the firmware version is still showing as ’2.1-update1′.

Is there any other way I can force my phone to find it, or is Telstra no longer offering this OTA update? I would rather not do a manual update if I can help it.

    Thanks.

    • Davidx says:

I have the same problem, as reported by Martin (22/dec/2010).
Have telstra turned off the OTA 2.2 upgrade ?

    • MarkusB says:

I’m seeing the same issue still (4 Jan) – no OTA being offered to my 2.1u1 Desire when explicitly asking for it. Anybody at Telstra able to chase this?

    • Elliot says:

I have the same problem with my HTC deisre. I can’t upgrade OTA from 2.1 to 2.2. I paid a visit to my local Telstra shop to have a look at their phones. I noted that all of their phone (HTC, samsung, sony) were all running 2.1-update, and when I tried to upgrade they all stated that they were up to date. The only phone with 2.2 was the Galaxy Tab :) . Does this mean that Telstra is no longer supporting 2.2?

    • Andrew says:

Same issue here, has anyone found a telstra response to this?

    • Davidx says:

After my previous comment, I lodged a customer request using the online form. Received an email telling me I would be contacted within 2 business days.
After over 2 weeks of not-being-contacted, I bit the bullet and rang telstra.
So, after over an hour on the phone, 5 different ‘customer service consultants’ (6 if you count the HTC ‘consultant’ in the Phillippines), and being hung up on twice, I can report the following conclusions:
      1. Telstra tech support is absolute shite and only 1/6 of their ‘consultants’ know anything useful. Actually that is unfair: it should be 1/5, since the 6th bloke was HTC, not Telstra.
      2. The HTC desire android 2.2 OTA upgrade has NOT been turned off.
      3. Some handsets just don’t want to do OTA upgrades. Maybe they have old firmware, or maybe there is a ‘bug’ (whatever that might mean).
So if your desire won’t do OTA upgrades, you are stuck with the ROM upgrade path via your PC, as Telstra aint gonna do anything about it.

    • Elliot says:

So I finally gave up and loaded the ROM Image from my PC (which is a bit of a pain since I have a MAC – I ran the ROM install .exe on an XP running as a virtual machine with Parallels Desktop V6) which all worked fine.

  36. Phil says:

I know its irrelevant to this post but does ANYONE know when Telstra will release the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 2.1 Android upgrade?? Im sick of the dull 1.6 on my X10 :(

Every other provider seems to have already released it to their X10 customers. When will Telstra do the same? I can appreciate what Edward wrote on this post saying testing has to be done to ensure uprades work compatibly with the handset but an ETA would be great. I would rather know the date of the upgrade being reliease even it takes ages to come, than not knowing and just wait and wait.

    Can anyone help?

  37. Craig says:

    Hi,
when will the 2.2 (Froyo) update be available for the Motorola defy.
    Thanks.

    • Helen says:

Motorola has said officially during Q2 2011, but I have not heard a target date for Telstra — as you may know, Telstra customizes the Motorola build with widgets for Bigpond, Foxtel and such.

Unofficially, if you’re willing to go the custom ROM route, have yourself a look around the net, but be warned that it seems to have some missing pieces as well as rough edges similar to what people have talked about in this Desire Android 2.2 upgrade thread.

  38. Kevin says:

I have the HTC Desire with 2.2 installed and a Blueant bluetooth hands free car unit. With the introduction of 2.2, Android now supports the ability to make phone calls over bluetooth completely hands free. This is because 2.2 (finally) supports the voice commands over bluetooth feature – so all good…

BUT the Telstra release of 2.2 does NOT include the voice commands over bluetooth feature. On Whirlpool I have been told that there will be an update to Telstra’s 2.2 that will include this feature.

    So the questions are:
    1. Is there an upgrade on the way that supports voice commands over bluetooth (as the rest of the 2.2 community has already got)?
    2. If so, when?

    Regards

  39. Frank says:

    Hi,
anyone know how to turn off or at least reduce volume of notifications whilst on call?
Running 2.2 Build 2.26.841.2 Telstra HTC Desire.

When I am on a call and another call leaves a message or sends SMS the notification volume is defaning such that I have to withdraw from the handset.
Really annoying and a potential hearing and ear damage issue.

Hope it is a quick fix and yes I have RTFM, but happy to have obvious pointed out if I missed something.

    Ta,

    Frank

  40. JT says:

Thanks everyone for all the advice.
I will give the HTC a miss and stick with Nokia as I have always has good connectivity (bluetooth, Outlook etc) with their applications. ALso the phone work really well whether in Australia or overseas. And they are a phone company unlike Microsoft which tries to be all to everybody.

  41. Ryan says:

When will this update be available for the Wildfire???

  43. Craig Brown says:

    Richard,

For those of us that are unable to access the 2.2 on-air upgrade, perhaps you could post a link to some instructions for a manual installation?

  44. stephen says:

Telstra anounced the relese date for 2.2 for galaxy s It was sept 21 2010 why has it not been released??

  45. JT says:

    Hi all,
Given the research and experienced that many of you have had, what phone would you recommend?
I also see that the best priced plan from Telstra is the Apple Iphone 4 compare to phones with the same capability. What are your thoughts on value for money, reliability and, most importantly, phone performance.

  46. Martin Ross says:

I am able to make outgoing calls on my HTC Desire through my handsfree (Blueant ST3) but does not accept/transfer incoming calls to the handsfree. Any ideas ??

  47. Marvy says:

Anyone form telstra able to give us any idea when you will finally get 2.2 out for Samsung Galaxy S ??
Weve been waiting and waiting was September then late dec early jan now we are heading into march, come on telstra or anyone whats going on ?????????

  48. David says:

2.2 for galaxy s !!! You wouldn’t expect a large company like telstra to know something as simple as that , its a joke every other phone company optus, voda ect have it out and have had for some time. When you have a spare couple of days you should try and ring them to find out ….. You will be told that no one knows but for a select few who can’t seem to be contacted and they don’t speak to the public anyway….. Its fun to be treated like an idiot … Telstra we want an answer now …. Someone must know , even a rough time .. Why can’t someone ask these secret “men in black” and let us plebs know is that to much to ask ? I know its alot to ask

  49. Marvy says:

Well its now March and still no 2.2 for Galaxy S, Totally let down by telstras woeful service !
Can not believe not one telstra rep has the ability or interest to get on here and let Telstra Samsung Galaxy S owners know what the hell is going on.
I have tried ringing telstra a number of times only to get transfered to about every dept they can think of where no one seems to have any idea at all, they then transfer you to samsung who again say they are done with it, samsung have sent it to telstra for release/final testing but every time they try to get an answer as to the cause of the hold up they get no reply, the samsung rep then tells you he will send another email on your behalf inquiring as to the delay…..
One thing for sure with service like this I wont be rushing to sign up for anything else from telstra…
seems we have no other choice now but to install Darkys rom…

  50. Santhosh says:

Will the Froyo update add DLNA capabilities to the Desire? Or do we need to install any application to enable DLNA on a Desire running on Froyo?
