Review of the Telstra Ultimate Mobile Broadband USB Modem
I couldn’t believe my luck when Kristen Boschma from Telstra asked me to review their new high speed wireless internet. As someone who’s business is based around the internet a fast internet connection makes your life a lot easier and your day a lot happier.
First impressions of the USB modem was that it’s a smart looking product, with a nice stainless steel USB connection. Not sure if this makes it work any better or faster, but let’s face it looks count. I also liked the size, whilst still compact it’s bigger than normal USB modems so it doesn’t get lost at the bottom of my handbag which is a common issue with my current Vodafone USB modem.
My first chance to test the new Telstra Ultimate Mobile Broadband USB Modem was when we visited a local hotel for a weekend. Whilst I tried not to work, my schedule was hectic and I needed to do a few things on the internet in between the eating, drinking and lying by the pool.
Of course without reading any instructions I plugged in it and within 3 minutes my internet was connected. Very easy, it did all the work, I just entering in the pin number and the rest was done. I didn’t like the fact that it installed an extra Telstra My Place option (a pop up of some description) but I’m sure if I could have unticked this box during the installation process.
Since it claimed to be the fastest wireless internet, I decided to conduct a speed test. Based on the Gold Coast we are 80km from the CBD of Brisbane, so I wasn’t expecting speeds of 10 Mbps or 20 Mbps. Generally I get about 1 Mbps or 1.5 Mbps from Vodafone around the Gold Coast, that is of course assuming you can get coverage, but more on that later.
In Broadbeach I was getting around 3.5 Mbps. Almost three times faster than other wireless internet on the Gold Coast. When I returned home I run a quick speed test. Based in Ashmore, I compared my ADSL internet (wireless to by laptop) and got speeds of 3.83 Mbps. Fairly average. Then I plug-in the Telstra Ultimate Mobile Broadband USB and got a whopping speed of 14.03 Mbps. Now I was impressed!!
The other benefit I found was when I was running a 3 hour workshop on Social Media. The workshop was due to start at 9am, however I had the internet connected and everything set up by 8:15am. By the time I was packing up at 1pm, the internet was still connected. No drop outs at all. My usual wireless internet is Vodafone and if you are based on the Gold Coast you would know that your coverage isn’t the best, so between no coverage and a very weak signal, drop outs are very frequent.
I’m looking forward to ditching my Vodafone wireless and continuing to use my new Telstra Ultimate Broadband USB Modem.

Can the Telstra ULTIMATE Modem have a Prepaid SIM inserted if brought outright? Or can it only be used on a plan.. I think that all the mobiles are capable of being used as prepaid so can all the mobile modems and air cards, and if not why not?!!!
One other thing, is Telstra/Bigpond going to sell the Air Card 313U and or the 320U Modem 100Mbps down/50Mbps up when they come out, out in Canida soon?
Mitch, can this device take a micro sim card as well
Thank Kim
can you connect this internet to your ps3
Any chance to test out the new Telstra 4G?
3G is useless during the day from our Mildura Vic Tower, I’d not buy one if you expect speed, they work well between midnight and 6am, isolated country towers have a faster speed as they are not overloaded like the metro / city towers.
I have a Telstra Ultimate modem operating at Irymple Avenue, Glen Iris, Vic. I am driven mad by continual dropouts. Can’t wait to get rid of this rubbish service.
This is my second attempt to send this comment, the earlier attempt suffered a signal dropout as I sent it!!!
Hi Les, I will have someone investigate and post back here.
Hi Les, The tech people say that data is normally very good in this street, and suggest that you head towards nearest Telstra store to have device checked.
I have done this already. I purchased the unit at the Gold Coast and I
operate from there and from Irymple Avenue.
I have added an antenna extension, from http://www.antennashop.com.au, which sits
on my house roof, in almost clear view of the nearest transmitter. My
regular download speed out of business hours is 3.5 Mbs. During business
hours this speed drops off markedly and drops out completely during busier
business hours.
The problem seems to be with Telstra signal not being able to handly the
traffic. This is rather strange as I am in the middle of a largely suburban
area.
The problem continues!!
Hi Les,
You may have already done this but if not, Dump the Ultimate modem and get into a white ($139) ZTE 4G Telstra modem per paid, if you have post paid just insert the sim and check the box, have already activated.
, And if you set up a G-Spotter panel antenna, you should achieve downs of upto 60mbs from Plaza tower or the langtree ave tower, I had one and now a friend has it 17km out at yelta and gets 4G from the mildura tower.
I currently run the True Blue (MIMO) antenna as I need fast up-loads, getting well over 50mbs down and 15-20mbs up, from 6kms from plaza tower near the airport.
cheers
Tom
Delighted to hear it worked so well on the Gold Coast. Vodafone here is a joke – a reliable USB connection is long overdue from somebody. Some aspects of Telstra are annoying but it must be said their coverage is usually pretty good
Hi Tom,
Hi Tom,
Thanks for the advice. I purchased, as you suggested, a ZTE 4G modem from Telstra for $129 and pitched my useless 3G Ultimate. Installation of the 4G onto my Telstra 24 month plan was not so simple, so I paid $20 to telstra to do it for me; a wise move in retrospect.
Result so far is a regular download speed 6.5 Mbs and no drop outs. What a difference a day makes.
