Telstra unleashes HTC Wildfire

blog-htc-wildfire-coming-banner

After the success of the HTC Desire we’re really excited to be able to launch its little brother – the HTC Wildfire.

The big news with the HTC Wildfire is that it’s our first pre-paid smartphone for Next G™ network customers.

It features the same easy-to-use user interface and Google Android 2.1 operating system that’s made the HTC Desire such a popular phone.

It’s tailored especially for what our younger customers want.  That means it is:

Great for social networking

It has some great social networking apps built-in, including HTC’s Friend stream which allows you to view friends’ Facebook updates, Tweets and Flickr photos in one organised stream, all on the same screen. We’ve also included Telstra’s own social networking service which is called Tribe.

It brings together Facebook®, Twitter and MySpace in a single mobile portal and is free-to-browse — which means customers don’t need to worry about how much data they’re using. Pre-paid customers just need to have a minimum recharge of $20 in the last 30 days to access the unmetered service.

HTC Wildfire™ is also the first Telstra smartphone to feature Swype™ text input technology. It allows customers to glide their finger across a virtual keyboard to spell words, rather than tapping out each letter.  It makes updating social networking sites that little bit faster.

  • It entertains: Wildfire provides access to thousands of games from Android Market and its YouTube app makes it easy to watch videos. Our customers can also choose from the 33 channels available on from Telstra.Mobile FOXTEL
  • It’s great value: Our pre-paid customers are looking for the best value possible. They will be able to pick up the Wildfire for $349 — no need for a contract. This includes a $10 recharge credit to get customers going.
  • It looks good: Looks are important. Wildfire features brushed aluminium highlights and it’s available in ‘Pure White’ or ‘Phantom Black’. It’s also nice and compact.

We think it’s a great little package. Check out the video shot at the launch and let us know what you think.

Availability and Pricing

HTC Wildfire on the Next G networkTelstra Pre-Paid customers can purchase the HTC Wildfire outright for $349 from 7th September.

Customers can team it with Telstra’s new Pre-Paid Cap+ offer which buys customers bonus credit to use on standard national calls and SMS to Australian and international numbers. For instance, customers who recharge $30 can receive a $170 bonus credit for voice calls and SMS to Australian and International numbers and 50MB of bonus data. The more customers recharge the higher the bonus credit.

  • Fone Zone will offer the HTC Wildfire in Pure White (Post-Paid variant only) exclusively from 24 August (until 28 September when the colour becomes available from all Telstra stores and partners).
  • Telstra Stores and Partners will offer HTC Wildfire in Phantom Black from 7 September on Pre-Paid, with Pure White to be made available from the 28th September.
  • Customers can also purchase HTC Wildfire on a range of Telstra Post-Paid plans including for $0 upfront on Telstra’s  $49 Cap Plan when signing up for 24 months (Min Cost $1,176) from 24 August.

When are you going to have a htc desire or wildfire with a blue tick.I will not be updating my mobile until this is available

  2. Tony B says:

The Wildfire ia a great new phone and I personally believe that HTC are by far the best manufacturer of mobile phones. My problem is that mobile phones are used for two main purposes. There are the peopple that use it to communicate only in all forms and there are those that additionally use the smart phone PDA capabilities.
Android operating system is great for the first group but microsoft is currently the leader in an operating system that supports PDA functions.
Alas, in your range then HD model requires a wheelbarrow to carry it around.
The recently released HD mini is ideal for the latter personnel that require the communication and PDA capabilities but not available in Next G format.
Telstra, please add it to your product range.

  3. wildfirer says:

My local Fone Zone has the Wildfire available outright, but for $500! They are expecting prepaid in the next week. For the $349 prepaid Wildfire, can anyone help me out on what the fee for unlocking is (as I will need to use the phone overseas also!)?

  4. Tony B says:

No idea what the fee is to unlock a Telstra phone but suggest you buy a HTC HD mini as you will not be required to unlock this unit.
Purchase at Harvey Norman for $600

  5. whatone says:

i just checked the telstra website and can only see the wildfire listed in post-paid with an outright price of $469.00…
Can’t find the pre-paid offer for $349.00… IS the pre-paid offer eva coming????

  6. Harry says:

Why isnt the htc wildfire available on prepaid yet

  7. Saf says:

got an email from telstra pre-paid tonight and they said wildfire available from Telstra shop and partners from 07 sept(today suggest ya visit your local shop as it has’nt been updated on web site yet

  8. Tom says:

Bought one yesterday from the telstra shop at $349

  9. Saf says:

bought the Wildfire as a prepaid yesterday ($349 at Telstra Shop) couldn’t be happier with it

  10. james says:

i did buy a wildfire on the day it was available as a pre paid phone. the price was brilliant.

but the service was terrible. telstra staff didn’t have much of an idea about whether or not it was available at 349 and were fairly rude the entire time. regardless of that i am very happy with the phone..

the only downside being the terrible (from any perspective) applications telstra force onto the phone, most of which are useless links which i could just as easily have used as a bookmark if for some god forsaken reason i actually had a need for any of them.

telstra need to realise that those who purchase android platforms do so because it is an open platform, and few of those who do will be attracted to those terrible telstra apps.

so the price was good, enough to convince anyone.. but you really almost kill it.

    • john says:

hi, has anyone else had trouble sync-ing a wildfire to the pc?
i have tried for hours, and i have had my computer tech have a go also, to no avail.

  11. cc says:

Anyone know when Telstra will offer white color Wildfire (post paid)?
From the post it said “until 28 September when the colour becomes available from all Telstra stores and partners” but I have checked 3 T Life shop and none of them said they have white color ones.

  12. Steve says:

When is Froyo coming? It’s been out for months now, and even the Desire hasn’t had a FOTA update.

  13. IS IT GOOD says:

heyy I might be getting a HTC Wildfire and I wanna know is it anygood. I am a big texter is it easy to text on it.

  14. Phill says:

Android market apps are moving on but the Wildfire is still stuck on an old version of Android. Many apps do not appear in the market for the Telstra Wildfire because of this. Other markets around the world are pushing the Froyo update for the Wildfire. When will Telstra make it available?

  15. Brenton says:

When will customers from Telstra with a HTC Wildfire receive the Froyo 2.2 update?
It’s been months since it’s release and other telecommunication companies have released it for their HTC Wildfires; why is Telstra (as per usual) lagging “behind the standard”?

  16. Rebecca says:

Really pleased with my Wildfire, but when will it get the 2.2 update? Soon I hope……

  17. Simon says:

I bought my HTC Wildfire outright for $300 from Dick Smith store, and quite ok with its functionality (aside from shorten battery life when playing solitaire or watching TV live). I read Android Froyo 2.2 upgrade provide many improvement including better battery life.
    - Any news when customers from Telstra with a HTC Wildfire will see the Froyo 2.2 update?
    - Any indication of target date of availability?
    - Or does Tesstra has any plan to provide 2.2 upgrade this quarter?

  18. scott says:

I also would really like to know when the 2.2 android update for the wildfire is going to become available?????
    Does anyone know???

  19. Jim says:

Also interested when Telstra will be releasing the update for 2.2 (Froyo) for Wildfire as HTC have stated that all 2.2 upgrades will be completed worldwide by end of Feb 2011.

Come on Telstra, its been adequately tested already!!

  20. Jason says:

I have been told that Telstra might never release the 2.2 update for the Wildfire.
I will be very upset if this is true.

    • wanderer_oz says:

This is a very valid reason to stay away from any future Nextg Android phone. I bought the HTC with the hope of the software will be upgraded (at least one new version). But, the Nextg feature just ruined the plan, not to mention that Nextg handsets are 30% to 50% dearer than a non-Nextg.
Very disappointed if this happened to be true that Telstra will not release an upgrade android for Wildfire.
      Simon

  21. Jason says:

I was just reading that Gingerbread 2.3 might be available for the Wildfire.

  22. Geoff says:

It’s March now, and still no 2.2

  23. nick says:

Telstra had better release 2.2 or ill be very dissapointed. If they do I bet everyone else in the world will have 2.3 by then. I won’t hold my breath.

  24. Jess says:

Am being ripped off by telstra – purchased my wildfire for $299 – it is locked to telstra correct?
I want to unlock it and move to the TPG network

can anyone please tell me whether this is possible and how much it will set me back.

    • Brendan O'Keefe [T-EX Customer Engagement Manager] says:

Hi Jess, Please call 132200 to find out all the details. Brendan

  25. Matt says:

if Telstra was so committed to customer satisfaction and innovation why are we having to wait for the Froyo update? Pretty sure if you want to be an industry leader you should at some point………. lead?

  26. SHIRALLEE says:
