iPhone 4 – returning to Telstra stores from Wednesday
Filed under: Apple, consumer, customers, gadgets and gizmos, iPhone 4, mobile phone, smart phone
Hi everyone,
Well it’s official – iPhone 4 is Telstra’s fastest selling iPhone yet.
We’re attributing this to a phenomenal product, some very appealing data plans and the strength of Telstra’s Next G network.
The downside to this unprecedented demand is that iPhone 4 has sold out at Telstra stores across Australia.
However, we will be replenishing stock as quickly as possible and expect new stock to start arriving in Telstra stores from Wednesday.
In the meantime, we’re taking down details in-store and online and we will update you when your preferred iPhone 4 model arrives. Priority will be given to customers who have already visited us in store or registered their interest online.
Thanks for your patience while we work with Apple to bring new stock to our stores across Australia.

Awesome! I totally can’t wait! May I ask about the paper work that I should be prepared for when I wanna go get an iPhone? I mean those 100 points of paper work to sign up for a new phone. If anyone could please advise me that would be really appreciated. Thank you
Is it likely that most stores will have enough stock to cover registrations done in store on launch day? I put an order in with Apple directly when I missed out in store but if likely to be able to get one on Wednesday i’d prefer to get it through Telstra and will cancel the other order. Cheers and thanks for keeping us updated!
How will the online sign up work?
Will we be contacted and then we specify a store to pick it up from?
Thanks
Rebekah,
registered in-store and online. so do we get double priority? our local store apparently got 7 iPhones in the first lot. if that happens again, i will be waiting till christmas, coz, my name was on thrid or the fourth page in the in-store list.
1) The 100 Points of ID is a minimum requirement for all Telstra contracts. A driver’s license is 70 points + ATM/ Credit Card is 30 points= 100 points. Most people could sign up with ID that they carry with them in their purse/ wallet.
2) It is likely that the stores will get enough store to cover in-store registrations. However, this will be determained by Apple themselves who like to released limited amounts to maintain demand.
3) To pick up a pre-ordered phone from a certain store- you will have to call that particular store to register your interest. This is simply a blog maintained by Telstra’s marketing team.
4) The online sign up with put you on a register, however, when they contact you, it will to sign you up over the phone with a voice contract. the unit with then come from an interstate warehouse.
Personally, I can’t see a signifant change between the iPhone 3GS and iPhone4 except for the multimedia capabilities. However, from various sources, I can say that iOS 4.0 run exceptionally slow on the 3GS and works seemlessly on the iPhone4.
Despite this- I can’t wait to get mine
Does it have the WiFi’s and the bigger GB’s?
Do you even know what that means? You sound like a typical Apple bashing douche.
Go Apple!!
Doesn’t anyone watch the news anymore – this phone has a major flaw in it’s reception. To advertise that the bumper significantly improves the Next G service signal is correct, however it is improved to the level that it should be and no better. If you remove the bumper then you will significantly reduce your signal strength (haven’t seen this advertised). I have a 3GS and was eagerly awaiting the iPhone 4 only to be disappointed.

In tennis, the continental grip is a standard racquet grip, which is excellent for return of serve, or so we’ve been told. If you hold the iPhone like this, however, you can expect a nasty shock. Yes, we’re talking about the iPhone “death grip”, and if you thought Apple would solve this issue before daring to release this phone in Australia then you’d be wrong — dead wrong.
The first thing we did with the iPhone 4 when we ripped the plastic off the milky white box was grab it in the death grip and watch for the signal bars to disappear. It takes about 30 seconds before the first bar drops, then the fall off is steady after that. But what does this all mean in real-world situations? It’s one thing to watch signal bars come and go, but does this issue affect the way the phone operates?
I want the white one…. are they ordering more white ones too??
coz iphones are the best. i want an iphone
I don’t care about the reception, the iPhone 4 is better. It’s 3G.
what up with comment that Chris made? i love iPhone muchly! bigger GB’s mean i can watch more Stevey videos! WiFi’s allow me to surf internets in bed instead of talking to my boyfriend
Apple treats me well – i dont have to think – it just works!
I cant wait for iPhone 5 – more GBs!
Actually, a Driver’s license is worth 60 points, Australian Passport 70, ATM card 40, Medicare card 25, NSW Photo ID Card 30. You will need at least one primary ID (License or Aus Passport).
@Chris – James is quoting a very popular YouTube video “iPhone 4 vs HTC EVO” … it is very amusing I recommend you check it out.
@Steve – I’m horribly offended by that video.
Firstly there is swearing in it, and it’s a big reason why I agree with restricting content on the iphone.
Secondly you should not just put a blanket stereotype on Apple users. All those simpletons out there will end up doing the same thing and hating Apple. It’s just wrong to mass influence a target demographic like that.
So if I have a passport (I’m an oversea student) and my credit card + Australian bank card(ATM). I’ll be fine, right? Do I need bank statement?
Further to Chris G’s comment above:
Telstra customers with disability who may not have a driver’s licence or passport can also get the minimum 100 Points of ID required for Telstra contracts. E.G. one acceptable primary form of ID is a Blind Citizens Australia Card. This is especially of interest for the iPhone because of its voice over screen reader and zoom text features, which make it a natural choice for people who are blind or have vision impairment.
Of course all Telstra shop or inbound call centre consultants will know to check the Telstra intranet KnowHow site for acceptable forms of ID for customers with disability, so we can provide the same great service – and products such as the iPhone – to all our customers.

can you please confirm the above is correct???
Well, it’s official; Telstra Hervey Bay haven’t got my iPhone 4 in yet even thought I’ve already signed the damn contract! I hate you Telstra and if I had my iPhone 4 now I’d ring up and complain!
@ Daryl H, I called them yesterday to put my name down for pre-order and they said they will come into the store on Thursday or so but I hope it should be tomorrow on Thursday.
@ Jay, I wish they’d do that cos I’m a heavy data user and texting than voice calls. Could telstra exployees tell us if it’s true or not please?
what happened to stock coming back today, stores don’t seem to know anything about it, the deadpan response from the staff was ‘they don’t tell us what’s coming’ other stores don’t answer the phones to even inquire about stock, how are you meant to buy one!
I’ve been pretty disappointed in the way Telstra has dealt with this launch. I’ve registered my interest twice-once before launch and then again to your new form when they ran out of stock-and I’m yet to receive any type of communication (phone call, email, or otherwise). I’ve visited two t[life] stores, first on Friday launch day, and then again on Monday, and both times I’ve been told I can’t put my name on any type of waiting list–the best I got was a “Come back Wednesday”. It just seems ridiculous for all the effort I’ve made and attempts to purchase the device that I can’t seem to find a way to purchase a phone in an orderly fashion, and are being continually forced to resort to trial and error. It’s disappointing because you’ve got a fantastic network, a helpful local call centre and (now, finally) competitive plans for the iPhone 4.
well, looks like this press release was a bunch of lies just like every other press release that Telstra puts out. I pre ordered my iphone last week and was told they would be in Monday or at the latest wednesday just gone. i called monday…..no not in, i called tuesday…..not in, i called wednesday….not in. I think that if a company doesn’t know when something you have ordered comes in then they shouldn’t lie and make up a date they should just say we don’t have a date yet. Its not hard….
@ben you were lucky, I keep calling and can’t even get to talk to anyone, all I get is an automated phone system and get asked to leave a name and number and someone will call me back, wouldn’t be so bad if they did actually call back
I signed up @ midnight launch and was also told that I would receive my 32gig Monday. Still nothing.. not very happy.
Totally agree with Ben. None of the stores I call answer their phone. No response from online registration. How is online registration gonna work? Are we gonna be told to pick it up from the nearest store? disappointed at the moment.
and again went into the t-shop and was told maybe today, maybe tomorrow, or even next week. Seems that this whole ‘telstra will be getting more iphone 4′s wednesday was all lies’. Just another of those ‘lets make the public think we are here when really we are not’
I think it is disappointing that Telstra haven’t sent any iPhone4′s to Canberra T Life stores this week?
I’ve been reading here and other places that many T Life stores did get a resupply, but not the Canberra based ones?
I lined up on launch day – but missed out… was registered on their in store list…all to no avail? I’ve also registered online, and on the with another T Life store… again to no avail?
I appreciate the iPhone is very popular, and that there is more demand than there is supply, but it seems certain cities are being re stocked but others aren’t?!?!?
What makes Canberra T-Life better or more deserving of Apple iPhone stocks than any other stores across Australia?
[quote] Seems that this whole ‘telstra will be getting more iphone 4’s wednesday was all lies’.
umm not sure if everyone actually read the article before complaining…espcially the title of the article..
iPhone 4 – returning to Telstra stores from Wednesday
key word ‘FROM’….
I have read (in a news article via google, sorry don’t have the link) that apparently apple is giving preference to apple stores, restocking them before other carriers.
This might be a little off topic but I have been having the same problems with Optus customer service at my local Strathfield store. Told my iPhone 4 would be in friday, then monday, then today but now unsure.
Apple have really screwed this launch up…
As I was writing this I received a sms from ’0421290383′ stating: ‘Optus MSG: Just to confirm that your iPhone order is still in progress. We’ll SMS you as soon as your iPhone is ready for delivery. Thanks for your patience!’
Great! I would prefer to be dumped via sms… Good way for them to try and avoid customer service alltogether !
so update for you…. got a call to say my iphone was in….GREAT!!!!! well not really…. went down to the t-life shop, gave my name etc….. they got my iphone….. then when i said i dont want to sign a contract they said sorry tough…. They have price tags in store stating out right cost $1008.00 so when i said i will buy the phone out right they said not allowed to. I asked whats the deal with the ‘buy outright’ price on the tags clearly displayed in store they said thats the total cost over 24months…. however they couldnt give me a break down of which plan would be the 1008.00 cost…. when i asked ok i’ll sign up to the plan that gives you the total cost of 1008.00 and then i’ll disconnect it straight away and pay the break of contract fee…. They stated that the break of contract fee for the phone would end up costing me a good 3-4 hundred dollars more than the 1008.00…..seems that telstra have screwed up yet again…..i give up…. i will be looking at taking my 3 mobile services, 2 internet services, and 2 land lines away from this miserable bunch and going somewhere else! it just seems to be one thing after another lately…. this is what happens when you start to outsource your business to the phillipines!
ben, if you want an iPhone without a contract, get one from an Apple Store.
Telstra announced with their plans prior to launch that they we’re offering it outright. You should have done your homework.
Mate, you’re lucky you even got a call. I must have registered on the website at least 3 times (once on the first day Telstra had expression of interest form on their website) and registered/pre-ordered with 2 T-Life stores last weekend and still nothing.
@Ben — “this is what happens when you start to outsource your business to the phillipines!”
At the T-life shop were you talking to Aussies in Australia or u were video-conferenced to someone in Phillipines?
Does anyone have an indication on the delays for Enterprise customers? SA Government is a large Enterprise customer. We’ve had phones on back order for over a week and no ETA on when they will arrive.
Stocks were supposed to be in today but just called 125111 to be told to ring back on Friday as no stock available.
@Geoff, stock has definitely been going out, I just got a call from the T[life] store where I had put my name on the list (6 days ago) to tell me the phone was there for me ready to go, I picked up 2 elsewhere already 5 days ago so let them know I wouldn’t be needing it so it would go to the next person on their waiting list (currently 100, was 20 when I called and left my details), so the stock is certainly trickling out, this was the only store I called where they actually returned my call, added me to a list and followed up, a few others I tried I’m still waiting to hear from so at least good work from one (the Elizabeth St Sydney store)
Thats funny because today when ringing mobile network in Melb who is telstra told me another 1 to 2 months to get 6 of the 32G for our work place. We registered before it came out and was told 2 weeks ago it would be instore middle of Aug and now another 2 months!
So I registered on your website last Tuesday 3rd.
I still haven’t received a call and know that people who registered after me have? What’s the deal.
I completed the paperwork in store and am now on the telstra network on my 3GS (which is miles above vodafone who I left) but am still waiting for the handset…
Me moron! Me want iphone! Me want iphone now!
Wow. I feel so lucky. Was tempted to go to the midnight launch but decided to just go to a shop in the city on launch day. Surprised that there was not even a line at George St T-Life store near Wynyard. Got one of the last 10 left. But this was at 10am already!
@Freddy Tried to replicate the “death grip” on the unit once I got it – this was even before making my first phone call – and just couldn’t get it to fail. I think AT&T network is worse than Telstra, and the iOS 4.0 bar issue makes the bar drop much more than on my unit (which has iOS 4.0.1)
If people hate Telstra so much why dont you go to another provider & be just as dissappointed…..the reception outside major cities is disgraceful on all other networks except Next G
they should give telstra back to us aussie’s at least we wouldnt lie to you and mess you about fair trades should shut them down
Telstra have been screwing customers arround. Some stores say they will give me one as soon as they come in if I place 100 deposit- and then others in the same store the next day don’t give you the same offer. Whats with the run around?!?! I don’t understand why I should be paying my contract right now when I have no phone?!?! They signed me up and I have received NOTHING- how is this fair? People who have signed up for the contract after me get one but I can’t- what is the justification.
They also told me to physically come into the store daily to check- as it is apparently a first come first serve basis on the day, regardless of who signed up when. Telstra is shocking! Fess up and tell your customers what is going on
Hi Angry, Sorry to hear you have had a negative experience in one of our stores. I sent you an email. Could you please get in contact with me so I can look into this for you.
Hi Angry, I’m having the same run around. Signed up with Telstra over the phone and they sent me the sim card. Now I can’t get a phone. I’ve been on waiting lists for 5-6 weeks and no one calls. Then I hear people who sign up on over the phone and are sent their phones the same week. People at my work have made calls to stores and got their phones same day without being on a list. It’s the biggest joke.
Hi Julian , If you can send me a contact number and account number/SIM #, I’ll get someone to call you and see if sort this out for you. Cheers, Brendan
Yep 6 weeks thats me too. Did the deal with Telstra and bundled my home stuff too. Got a sim, havent got a phone. I did it by phone because I don’t have time to get in store. The next thing I hear is there is no stock.
Telstra contacted me , told me iphone 4 available in 5 days if I stayed and renewed my contract. Several weeks passed nothing happened,no contact. I rang this morning and they said sorry no stock. Order has been cancelled, thanks for nothing once again. I will buy my own from Apple
Same problem here. Was contacted by Telstra Reseller and told I could have my Iphone phone next day, if I changed over all my contracts (home phone, other mobiles), which I did. 5 weeks later after numerous calls to them, they now tell me it will be at least another 3-4 weeks. No proactive work from Telstra at all.
Also the same.Long time Telstra customer rebundled everything, and ordered 2 iphones its been 3 weeks just been told new order system would have to wait another 4 weeks.I bet everyone in Telstra that wants one has one and their friends.
@Brett
I have been told your issue is now resolved.
Thanks Michael
Another runaround story. I went to a T store today – no phones, but they advised me to try ordering by phone. But the phone response was that as an existing customer, I can only get an I-phone through a T-store. New customers only! Didn’t make me glad to be ab existing customer.
Sounds like a phone order is just another endless wait anyway.
