Serving up more data you can use
The stars of MasterChef will be at the Telstra store in George Street Sydney tonight to plate up some very special data offers as iPhone 4 goes on sale.
We know our customers love accessing the mobile internet on the Next G network as much as they love a MasterChef cook-off. And, over the past couple of days you’ve told us that you’d like more data included to use with some of our hottest smartphones – including the iPhone 4.
So, from midnight tonight until November 1 we’re increasing data allowances on our most popular plans for some of our most popular smartphones.
Here’s what is available to customers purchasing the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, HTC Desire or Nokia N97 mini on the following plans from 30 July until 1 November 2010.
| Telstra Plan | Included data |
|---|---|
| $49 Consumer Next G Cap Plan | 500MB (up from 200MB) |
| $79 Consumer Next G Cap Plan | 1GB (up from 500MB) |
| $99 Consumer Next G Cap Plan | 1GB (up from 500MB) |
| $129 Consumer Next G Cap Plan | 6GB (up from 1GB) |
| $55 Ultimate II Plan | 500MB (up from 200MB) |
| $85 Ultimate II Plan | 1GB (up from 500MB) |
| $110 Ultimate II Plan | 1GB (up from 500MB) |
| $150 Ultimate II Plan | 6GB (up from 1GB) |
As you can see, customers signing up to our plans can enjoy between two and six times the standard mobile data for the same price for the duration of their 24 month contract.
The special plans are being offered to customers connecting to Telstra for the first time, as well as existing customers who are re-contracting to these new smartphones.
We know customers want data they can use – rather than simply more data. That’s why we invested more than $2 billion dollars in the Next G network. So even with these increased data allowances our customers will continue to receive the speed and coverage you have come to expect from Telstra.
Revised data boosted plans for iPhone 4, iPhone 3G S until 1 November 2010

I thought the “Sol Trijillo” virus had re-infected the board of Telstra, No I was wrong.
@Brendan O’Keefe and if you signed up 3 weeks ago you are S.O.L.
Brendan
How about the data allowances on the business plans? Does this mean these aren’t changing?
Or are you going to change these later?
And if so will you screw over the early adopters and stick them with what they signed up for, or give them the increased data limits?
Seriously, we’re T-12 hours and people can’t make a proper decision because of flux in pricing.
I agree with SteveC.
Reasonable mobile caps, better adsl2 plans.
Telstra is slowly turning themselves around.
Keep it up!
Can you please confirm whether this is available to people who are stuck in the old billing system (and cannot get out no matter how hard we try!) ?
I don’t see a caveat there for it, but Cameron has a comment implying that’s the case.
I am coming back from Optus – you guys have finally listened!! Keep up the “listening”
Not very happy about this at all. What about your existing customers stuck on the $49 200mb deal? I signed up just two weeks ago for the HTC Desire. I understand you doing it for the iphone 4 (your original offer was not in the slightest bit competitive), but why not make your current customers happy for a change by back-dating the deals for all users of those phones that you are increasing the rates for (ie the HTC Desire and Nokia N97)? Now that would be impressive service!
On other matters, I am grateful that I can finally check my data usage after two weeks of hassle. That really did take a long time! What about making an app so that us users on the tiny caps can check our usage (esp. telstra/vs non-telstra usage)? Also, please, please, please allow us to remove those shortcuts and bloatware apps that you pre-install on the phones. Yes you have a right to put them on there, but surely we have a right to remove the ones we do not need!
Thanks and have a good day.
I signed up 2 weeks ago on a $49/200mb cap. Can this be changed now?
Will Telstra be offering 12 month plans for the iPhone 4?
Brendan, I realise this is for new Telstra customers (I’d be porting from Optus) – but there’s never been any mention made that the same benefits applying to the Business Caps – i’m really looking for intra account calling amongst other things.
Is this likely ? Otherwise I’ll go with Optus for 12 months and see how things have changed then…
Paul and all those asking about business plans and updates. Please stay tuned….
Not too bad, still need a little bit more data to make you actually competitive, but at least you’re listening.
Brendan, thanks for staying on top of this.
I can only hope something is announced before 9pm tonight…i’ll be at work (Police) until 3am, then off to a store, and if I have the information that’ll make me happy I’ll go with Telstra.
Not that there’s pressure or anything
Hi Paul, You’re welcome. You can view this blog on your smartphone in your browser while you’re out and about…… Stay safe tonight.
Would like clarrification on this
“Offer only applies to data included on customer’s plan and to additional data purchased at time of connection.”
Does that mean I can get $49 cap plus 1 GB for $59 or is it $68?????????????
If I sign up (for example) to the $49 cap and then decide to bump up to the $79 before November, would I still be able to get the higher (1GB instead of 500MB) data limit?
you guys better come to the table with regards to business plans and not making us miss out…
you might find yourselves with alot of unhappy business customers who will switch providers!
What about existing business customers Brendan – should they stay tuned?…
Makes it even more worthwhile staying with Telstra.
Thanks for listening a little..
Now about those 12 month contracts and unlocking fees?
Telstra, “listen” to your existing customers! Here is a hot tip:
Back-date the extra data for those customers who have contracted to the new plans that were released in May 2010!
I’ve got a Desire on a 79cap and now the data is doubled on the same plan? :/
You’re doing well making all these changes, just a little tweaking like you’re doing is certainly helping too. Keep it up!
I checked with the TIO yesterday and they said there is a 10 day “cooling off” period from when you are FIRST connected – 10 BUSINESS days. If you’re within that limit and need to change plans, PUSH !
Great to see Telstra listening to customers’ feedback and upping the data allowance!
Anyone know what the early exit fees are for these plans, or telstra in general?
Finally plans that make sense! Whoever pushed this through – well done.
I have only ever been a Telstra Mobile client.
On July 7 I upgraded to a $49 capped plan with a HTC Desire and 200Mb data limit. Now today I find that Telstra has increased the data allowance to 500Mb. I am being denied this increase in data.
Why does this NOT apply to all $49 capped plans. Why do the new data limits not apply to all equivalent plans for that matter.
My ISP iiNet is continually revising my internet plan with no opt in reponse from me required. That is what I call GOOD corporate behaviour.
I signed up for a HTC Desire on the $49 cap (coming over from Optus) just last week.
So I sincerely hope I’m eligble for this increase.
Bravo.
$49 plan is now exactly how I hoped it would be. Great plan for those who don’t make a lot of calls and don’t plan on tethering their iPhone.
I signed up 2 weeks ago, I’m now kicking myself for not waiting for the iPhone 4 launch. I’d even settle for a one-off transfer fee to upgrade to the new limit.
2 weeks!!!!!!!!
Hi,
Could you please let me know if there will be any changes to the business plans?
actually, all of my queries are these;
(1) EARLY EXIT FEES – what are they for telstra?
(2) FREE CALLS – Do you get any free allocation or subsidised rate when calling other Telstra customers?
(3) JB HIFI discount – There is talk of JB giving $200 gift vouchers to new customers, not sure if you’d know this, but if you do, does this also stretch to Virgin customers?
Thanks!
Hey, while Telstra is in listening mode, how about you revise your ADSL2+ broadband plans so uploads are not counted in your monthly quota?
I’d join up for sure!
Bravo to Telstra for listening to the feedback about data allowances! Just this morning I was wondering whether 200 meg would be too restrictive once I had the speed of the iPhone 4 and the speed of the Telstra mobile network. I’ve been stuck on Optus for the past 2 years regretting it ever since.
I will have no hesitation in signing up for two Telstra iphone 4′s now. Thanks!
Now if they only retroactively applied it to existing customers… its not a big ask…
Brendan,
Are the ‘cap plans’ i.e available for business plans?
I mean…. Are the ‘cap plans’ i.e $49 Next G available for business plans?
Do the browsing packs benefit from the bonus data?
If I can get a 32gig iP4 on $49 cap with 1gig data allowance for $59/month + upfront costs I”ll be porting from 3.
Screw you Telstra. I only signed up 2 weeks ago and am stuck with the 200mb cap. These increases should be given to all users.
brendan –
*** you have asked us to stay tuned…thats great, how long till we can expect an update re:business plans??
thanks in advance
Hi Jim,
I read your post and have already talked to a telstra sales rep.
Free calls are not part of their service offering..
hope this helps
Hi Guys,
New plans look great, Telstra are really starting to become competitive and you can really see where David Thodey is really trying to get rid of the \Sol\ era Telstra attitude, pricing and company focus.
I have used, and will continue to use Telstra as I live in a part of Australia where there simply is _no_ other provider who has reception out here.
In saying that though, I would like an official response from somebody at Telstra who can either give a simple yes or no (not a maybe) on whether or not these changes will be made available to those who are already signed onto the cap plans?
I personally have a $49 cap with my Desire and the extra 300mb would save me $19 a month on my current fees, so yes it’s a small amount, but really it would be nice to not have to pay it, especially after putting up with Sol for so long
Thanks
Hey Telstra,
Great work on the data upgrade, but what you really need is a 12 month contract option. That will help you win over a lot of new customers! Potentially me…
When is an announcement likely to be made about business cap plans and increased data allowance for the iPhone 4?
I presume many business customers may hold off buying one tomorrow if there is no clarity on any changes that may be made?
I bought a brand new desire from a Telstra shop last week of June on the $79 cap. Any chance of being able to upgrade to get the 1gb data?
Yup – holding off until we know what the business plans are.
This still is not good enough. What is the point of having a fast network if you have bugger all data allowance to use? When is Telstra going to get the message and bring Australia in line with other countries and stop ripping us off. It cant be that expensive if ALL the other carriers can offer better deals.
I would also like to know a time frame for the Business plans announcement.
I would like to buy a few iPhone 4′s and bring my adsl, landlines etc over to Telstra.
150mb on the $45 Buisness plan just isnt enough.
Telstra sucks they do not look after existing customers their customer service is the worst of the worst. I signed up to a $99 plan in october, I have been cut off no less than six times during phone calls with them. I have a wireless broadband service with them and Platinum Foxtel IQ with additional outlet, I was going to transfer my home phone and home broadband service to them if they could change my $99 mobile plan over to the new offer. That is a total of 5 services with them and they wern’t the slightest bit interested. So to all you people who are praising Telstra think again.I will not be recontracting with this company again and will be disconnecting my Foxtel just because of the shiite service.
New customers they are interested in, but once they have got you, stand in line because you are forgotten about.
Should it not be for all Smartphones
Great news… but I suggest we all hold off signing up for a month or two and see what happens when the smoke clears – pity the poor folks who signed up early, sounds like they’ve been shafted.
I’m going to wait for clarification on business plans, esp. free calls between mobiles on the same account. Also tethering capacity and cost.
I’m off plan in September from Optus, and if Telstra continue in this competitive vein, I’ll be switching my 4 x phones across.
I prefer not to have a contract and buy my unlocked iPhone outright. I’m currently on the 1GB $39 data pack (was $59 prior to May). This is starting to look very unattractive compared to the included data on the new capped offers.
Any chance the price of these data packs will be reviewed again in light of these just announced plans?
BTW nothing will convince me to take out a 24 month contract. iPhone models become obsolete every 12 months and the just superseded model has a good resale value. Any chance of 12 month contract?
I’m planning on going in tonight at midnight and I am currently on a $150 business plan. I want to stay on a business plan, but want better value with data etc.
You eluded to some changes to business plans coming. I don’t want to get my new phone and sign up to a 2 year contract only to find out a new plan has become available after the fact and then be penalised if I want to take advantage of these new plans as has happened to me twice before. I have in my current contract been penalised twice and incurred charges for breaking my contract, when in fact I stayed with Telstra and simply wanted to be on a more reasonable plan.
I have a Telstra HTC Desire on a $79 cap plan that I brought about one month ago. I am very happy with the phone, coverage and service but I would REALLY LIKE TO SEE customers, such as myself, to be offered the same deal in respect to increase in data allowance. This is a very easy way for Telstra to “Impress” their customers and help to retain their continued service. I would be very dissapointed to miss out on this offer.
