Leaked Telstra iPhone 4 plans

Seems that there are some plans floating around about the iPhone 4. Sorry but these are not Telstra plans and we don’t know where they came from.
We are as excited as you are about the iPhone 4 and so we will reveal the real Telstra plans closer to the launch of iPhone 4. Keep an eye on this site and the @Telstra twitter team for the official plans.

Ah, but is Telstra being legit about its denial? One of the annoying things about big companies is they can claim every rumour is false until the company makes it official. Like how companies say “we have no current plans to do XYZ” when what they really mean is “we are not yet ready to announce our plans to do XYZ…”
All that being said, I have to say I’m not that desperate to know what Telstra’s iPhone 4 plans are, since the iPhone 3GS plans are now pretty good — way better than when Telstra was trying to make people go on a $150 plan just to get a subsidised iPhone, anyway…
Hi Dan
I saw Elvis yesterday and that moon landing stuff was all a plot too.
Seriously, these aren’t our plans and the denial is legit – I wouldn’t put my name on the blog or tweet otherwise. Happy to see you think the 3GS plans are decent.
Cheers
Kristen
Well thats good. As I think the false plans where still a little overpriced.
I hope Telstra are smart and are more competitive compared to the other carriers. Yes, Telstra has a great network but you really do pay for the experience. Please Telstra go for more volume sales this time and enjoy some of the huge benefits that Optus received with their great value iPhone plans last time. This is a great opportunity to really win over those iPhone 3G users that were on a two year contract.
My question is for Kristen,
Why did it take Telstra so long to have competitive plans with other carriers for the iPhone 3G and 3GS?
Jason (4:03pm) Optus has gone to the dogs since the iphone, their network congestion is terrible. Your phone would say 3G, but when it was time to check an email, it would drop back to GPRS or not get a data connection at all. Their network is over-subscribed to say the least, and all their profit hasn’t really helped the network performance. Telstra might be more expensive, or give you less data, but the connection works first time every time. Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten.
You know… You should have more respect for the general public and not treat us like idiots, these are clearly a leak of some kind, and to respond with ridiculous anecdotes is only proof that you guys have an internal security problem with leaked information.
Furthermore, what Jason says about your prices are exactly spot on… I truly was considering switching to Telstra if they had the right prices, you DO have the best network coverage in Australia, but along with that coverage comes an incredible amount of attitude and dis-respect to your customers. You continuously insult our intelligence. Your internet pricing is out of this world (Expensive) and 90% of your customer base are un-educated individuals who stick with you because they literally don’t know any better…
The public would appreciate an honest response. Simple. Give that a try. BTW your prices still suck so I think I will stick with Optus, Virgin or Vodafone for now. You guys need to try harder at winning over the public and not monopolize us.
I hope that Telstra have an “upgrade” deal for those (like me!!) that bought the iPhone 3Gs on a 24 month contract (earlier this year [i got mine in April]).
I mean that I could go, pay a little bit of money and get the iPhone 4 at a discounted price.
Yes/No?
The fact that the 3G plans were sooo bad (15 min Telstra queue, 5 hour Optus queue) I think is an indication that the iPhone 4 plans will suuuuck. I wouldn’t get too excited, although I’d be happy to be proven wrong.
any info on when the iphone 4 will be officially hitting our shores?
I’ll be in the market for a new phone soon after iPhone 4 is released. Jason is right. Here is your challenge, Telstra: Now is the time to steal a march on Voda & Optus by making call & data cap offers considerably more attractive. People want VALUE FOR MONEY and will migrate to you – or away from you – to get it.
It was obvious they were bodgy anyway, read the fine print at the bottom… “…and the new Micro-Sim currently used in the iPad is required for iPhone 4″
Yes, the iPhone uses a micro SIM, but what does that have to do with the iPad?
I would rather pay an extra $10-$20/month for a faster, more reliable network.
I tried being a cheapskate with 3, but never again.
As long as Telstra makes it competitive, and doesn’t try to “Gouge” customers, I am all for it!
I agree with Jason….Telstra lower your pricing to at least match what everyone else is doing and maybe, just maybe people will come back. After 18months with Optus I would happily moved back to T if only you werent so damn expensive. Yes the network is great compared to others and so it should be considering who Telstra is and where they have come from but the pricing does not reflect a competative attitude.
The supposed leak showed both 16gb and 32gb free on the $79 cap.. so I definitely don’t think it’s legit because they’d cost the same in the end!
Kristen,
glad these plans are false. yes, they are a bit overpriced (not sure what apple dictates to telstra). agree with Jason, volume sales in combination with new home bundles would be good. i think current 3GS plans could apply to iphone 4 as well. i know i am dreaming, but that’s what i have been doing for while. i think telstra should go in early and catch other carriers off-guard. here is the chance to lead…
Kristen
Can you please tell the CEO of telstra that there iphone customers want VISUAL VOICE MAIL.
This would compliment the iphone 4 very well.
Phew. Was thinking about moving to Telstra until I saw those fake plans. Those plans + an extra 250MB or so data on the $49 cap and you’ve got yourself a deal
John (7:23pm) Optus aren’t the best carrier, but it is usable. The average person can live with not being able to access their phone every second of the day. Given the huge marketshare for Optus it’s pretty clear that money talks more than network reliability. If Telstra have a great network AND provide better value than their existing plans they have a good opportunity to win over a lot of people.
Jason (8.55am)Optus aren’t the best carrier, but it is usable.
Neither optus or vodafone are usable for me anymore. Calls straight to voicemail when phone is showing full reception. Need to restart phone sometimes to get data. SMS’s wont send / arrive in batches.
After having the original iPhone, the 3g and the 3gs and having been with virgin, optus and vodafone I am definitely going with Telstra this time. My experience with 3g iPad with telstra has confirmed this.
I too am sick of Optus… Telstra giving me a phone for 2 weeks got me hooked on Telstra. While I used to be a fan of Telstra bashing (and still do with some of their other products), their mobile plans are becoming more ‘reasonable’. I’m now trying to toss up whether to switch carriers (either Voda/3 or Telstra —-> anything not Optus) and at what costs. Thankfully Ive got a business account which is better value (mainly for the free calls between account phones)… bring that feature to normal accounts (i.e. families) and you’d see not just one or two phone porting, but entire families/households porting their various phones over to Telstra.
RE: Optus line being 5 hours vs 15 mins for iPhone 3G (I was in the line on opening @ Optus George St) Yes – Optus got heaps of customers: but at the cost of basically bringing their network to its knees, and they were actually losing money on each iPhone sale! Now they charge for me to tether my iPhone to their network. Curiously, they don’t charge me to hook up my HTC Desire via tethering, only iPhones.
I have to agree with Matthew and I couldn’t have said it any better myself. ..But I’ll give it a go!
The only people who actually sign on for Telstra’s over-priced products and happily continue to use them while paying through the nose are 70 year old retirees who can’t tell a keyboard from a mouse and cashed up bogans who make $100,000+ a year digging holes on mine sites and couldn’t care less about shopping around for the best deal and spending all their savings. All you have to do is look at some of your ridiculously priced internet plans with minuscule quotas and you’ll know to steer clear. 5 percent of your customer base might have actually signed on for the “quality of service” but rest assured that the other 95% didn’t know any better.
Telstra, get your act together. Take a long hard look at your pricing versus your competitor’s pricing and above all, treat people with some respect because you WILL eventually lose your customers and market share, especially with the more tech-savvy generation of today.
Crapstra: I’m sorry, but that is just bollocks. It may be true about Telstra landline stuff, but there is such strong competition in the mobile space, that Telstra would have to work pretty hard to get customers onto Next G (especially given the higher prices) so a large proportion of them would have chosen it because of the service quality. Apart from anything else, Next G is the only network you can get coverage on in many places in Australia such as the Northern Territory etc.

I have passed your comment on Visual Voicemail to David Thodey. He reads this site too so no doubt he’ll get the message!
Alister
It’s a bit of a non-answer in that I’m sure you’d like to see a list of all the things we coulda or shoulda have done better in the past. I guess it can be summed up and is fair to say that David Thodey has brought a focus on customers and the need for Telstra to be more competitive.
When they launch, we think the new iPhone 4 plans will be very competitive. Hope you agree!
Cheers
Kristen
Hey Kristen,
Any hints on the new plans and when the iPhone 4 will be released? I promise I won’t tell anyone!! Haha.
But seriously, any word on special deals for upgrading Telstra customers with an iPhone 3G or 3GS to the iPhone 4?
I don’t mind recontracting for 24 months, but making us pay a break contract fee is a bit rude.
Regards,
Brent
Hi Brent
OK – I’ll just tell you but only if you promise to keep it a SEKRIT. The new plans are coming out on ………………. (that’s a code – see if you can work it out).
Seriously I just went and talked to the plan meister and he said that it won’t be too much longer but would not be more specific. You can register your interest here https://www.telstra.com.au/eoi/?FormID=181
I also told him about your upgrade question. More waiting I’m afraid…
Sorry
Kristen
WOW – a $9 Unlimited Cap Plan, $0 upfront iPhone 4 plus a free iPhone 4 for your bestest friend too!!
You need to work on a better code because now the whole world knows!
Haha fun fun. I like your style Kristen
Ok, I will wait with bated breath. Can you let me know first at least?
Very keen to hear about any upgrade deals – especially for a loyal Telstra household like mine!
Regards,
Brent

Damn! I thought my code was much harder to crack. Upon reflection, I would make the most terrible spy: I would confess anything if anyone touches (or looks at) my ears, I can’t decipher a cipher, I would need GPS to find the location of the dead drop, I would probably mix up the secret sentence and wouldn’t respond to my spy name (which BTW is “Glam Booker” according to a spy name generator).
We will try to look after you.
Your pricing approach is …. interesting….. and I’ll make sure the plan meister sees it too.
Cheers
Glam Booker
I was with Optus on a 3G iPhone. Like the statements above the network was absolutely abominable. I had to go to the TIO to get out of my contract.
Telstra’s 3G network is definitely one of the best in the world, and for that I am thankful.
However…. and its a BIG HOWEVER….
The customer service remains crappier than crappy, the staff are undertrained, I get passed from pillar to post when asking simple questions, seem to always end up in the Phillipines, and can only get to talk to an agreeable Telstra employee after lodging complaint after complaint with the TIO.
Kristen, I was a long-time employee of Telstra and Sensis, and I KNOW that the focus remains solely on $, not on the customer. This remains true no matter what corporate-babble you speak to us (your customers who pay your inflated wage) and to yourselves (your comrades who owe your mortgages to your customers).
Time to wake up, drop the arrogance, and start being competitive.
I think I’d have trouble responding to Beldon Fernardo. Yep, my spy name. Not very inconspicuous, I know. Even Bill Smith would find that name suss.
Thank you. Any efforts will be greatly appreciated, Glam Booker, if that is your real spy name.
Let me know the plan meister’s thoughts.
Regards,
Beld… Brent
Well hopefully the prices will be very competitive as well as the data amount. Frankly the data should look something like this
$49 cap = 500 MB
$79 cap = 750 MB
$99 cap = 1GB
$129 Cap = either 1.5GB or 2GB
as for the included voice, sms , etc it is about right now maybe a bit more of an increase.
If you give value….the crowds will come
Dave, there is absolutely no reason why Telstra cant do as good as the Competition..
It should be at least ,as follows.
$49 cap = 500 MB
$79 cap = 1.0 GB
$99 cap = 1.5 GB
$129 Cap = either 2GB
Free 5mins Telstra to Telstra on same account.
Free MMS/SMS on $79 cap and above.
Some free social networking and maybe even free Whereis navigation somewhwere..
I agree with Jason Grant. Telstra might have a great network, but it stops there. The pricing is not great and the service is even worse than that. It’s really unfortunate that I only have Telstra Bigpond as an option for ADSL2 in my area. Getting that connected and setup was an absolute nightmare due to the customer service incompetence. Once it works its fine, but I’d have to punch myself in the face as punishment if I went with Telstra for the iPhone 4 and needed to call customer service.
Kristen,
with that code language, i am sure you will make a fine spy in some parts of the world at the moment (you can guess which country).
Nice article here on iphone war in Australia – Can Telstra win it? http://www.businessspectator.com.au/bs.nsf/Article/Telstra-TLS-iPhone-HTC-Telco-Smartphone-Optus-Voda-pd20100708-764UQ?opendocument&src=rss
now, if telstra wants those 1.4 million optus iPhone customers,as well as retaining its 1.9 million, then this is the chance to do it.
Please make sure the plan meister sees this article too.
Dummies guide to winning the iPhone 4 war:
16 GB iphone 4 free on the $49 cap – also when bundled with home bundle, get combo reward and increased downloads etc.
32 GB iPhone – Free on the $79 cap – also when bundled with home bundle, get combo reward and increased downloads etc.
you can kill two birds in one – get optus iphone and homeline customers. also get paid for this by NBN for transferring them to new OFC.
well, i wait for the judgement day – let me get back to deciphering the code to find that out.
The only thing I’m expecting is Visual Voicemail or I have to port my number to Vodafone instead. ~~
I have an iPhone 3G and plan to buy the iPhone 4 when it is released here (I also plan to buy a 3G iPad, possibly the next model). Currently, our family’s home phone and three mobiles are with Telstra.
I must admit I am reasonably optimistic about the upgrade process, because my Apple retailer (NextByte Adelaide) made my iPhone 3G setup completely painless, including transferring my contract from my previous Nokia mobile phone. I’m hoping they can do the same for iPhone 4 and iPad, including transferring my daughter’s mobile to my iPhone 3G.
I look forward to hearing more about upgrade offers and general pricing for current iPhone customers.
(I refuse to get a spy name, because (being very ill) I have enough trouble remembering my own name, but I am willing to answer to “Madame X”, at least by saying “Huh?”. Kristen, I love the personalization, humour and direct contact you offer here.)
I too am interested to know what Telstra will do for their existing users who only recontracted recently and want to get the new iPhone… I contracted for 24months with an iPhone 3GS on a $55 Ultimate (Ultimate One plan back in the day) back in March and I’m keen to upgrade to the new handset however only if the price is right
Hi Clytie or Madam X
Thanks for your kind words. I’m glad it all worked well for you. I think that you might make a great spy because (as well as forgetting your name), you will forget secrets and therefore be an absolute asset if you fall behind enemy lines!
Cheers
Kristen
It’s Monday. Time for plans!
My bet is that the iPhone will be released on the 23rd or 30th July, time is running out.
Hey Kristen,
Basically we have to wait for Apple to announce when the iPhone 4 will be released in this country, before Telstra can announce its plans, correct ?
Hi Steve
We are working through the order of events with Apple. It all has to go like clock work. I’m not allowed to even hint at the impending order of things but I would say your deductive reasoning is sound.
Weasel words I know – but timing is critical and we all have to play nicely. Sorry I can’t be more specific. I promise we’ll carry the plans and pricing here just as soon as humanly possible.
Cheers
Kristen
We picked up 3G’s for our business 14m ago just before the 3GS was released. At that time Telstra would have cost us $120p/m + Phone vs $79 for Vodafone (600min/450mb Free Phone).
I put the father-inlaw onto Telstra last week when he wanted an iPhone. Telstra finally had a plan competitive which is good to see.
As long as Telstra can give something around $80-90pm with 5-600mins and 500mb-1gB data included we will be moving all the business phones to Telstra iphone4′s.
We now just wait and see if we can get the hell away from this crappy Vodafone service.
Hi Kristen,
Thanks for the reply, I wasn’t looking for a revelation. It would be due to over the top demand of course. Would be nice if we could get a date / postponed date as “late July” is getting closer and closer each day past.
Cheers,
Steve
Telstra’s new cap plans (released late May) represent better value and closer alignment to the current market offerings, however competitors continue to squash their prices and include more and more (data and other) value in their mobile products. As we move towards IP-only networks, fast data speeds and reliability are increasingly on the general public’s mind when considering a choice of networks. Telstra’s plans have often met with derision for their horrendous value, but users have made it ABUNDANTLY clear that the data speed/reliability of the NextG network is second to none. Rather than reducing prices or increasing inclusions dramatically to increase subscription-base (and thereby forgoing network speed and reliability á la Optus) could Telstra perhaps look at increasing included data in it’s mobile offerings while imposing a maximum data speed for certain plans (e.g a $49 cap offers more data but speed is limited to 1.5mbps, $79 limited to 3mbps, $129cap limited to 7.2mbps,etc, and maybe users could pay an additional premium to access faster speeds on a lower plan)? Telstra’s BigPond pricing already works like this. As people use their phones more and more as their primary Internet device, does it not make sense for connection speed to correlate directly to price, as has been the case with fixed broadband connections for years? And wouldn’t this help to avoid the congestion and speed issues that have plagued AT&T (in the US) and Optus, while allowing Telstra to increase it’s subscriber numbers?
Hi Steve
I go and visit the Plan Man every day and every day I ask for the iPhone 4 plans and I’m told “All in good time”. Some days he adds “my dear” and other days it’s “so go away now”.
I’m on the case – I’m as curious as you are.
Cheers
Kristen
Kristen, I never thought of that! I’m off to enlist with ASIO before I forget!
BTW, the next time The Plan Man calls you “dear”, call him “toots” in reply.
I can tell you all the plans and pricing
I am away on a spy mission until September. When I return, if I survive, I will publish them all <3
Hi Greg O.D.
The eagle flies east when the sun is setting. Good luck on your mission. The plans await.
Cheers
Kristen
Hahaha Kristen, you’re having fun with this one!!!
