Menage a trois may be a household of trouble

For those not completely up to date with my telephonic love life, I have added a new phone to my life. Of course my first smartphone Perry the iPhone still rattles around in my handbag, but I now have Desmond – another breed.
Like a dog owner about to add a new puppy to the pack, I may be about to severely disrupt the peace at home. I don’t know what it is, but I really, really, really want an Apple iPhone 4. Telstra will launch Apple iPhone 4, the thinnest smartphone in the world in Australia in the coming weeks.
You can now register your interest in Apple iPhone 4 on the Telstra Next G™ network by visiting here.
For more information on Apple iPhone 4 please visit here.
I need some help though. What should I call the new phone and how do I break the news to Perry?

Well, lucky you Kristen. The rest of us will pay through the nose in our blind (and foolish?) loyalty to Telstra in order to own one of these desirable (pardon the pun) devices.
Wouldn’t it be just great if Telstra saw fit to reward their longtime loyal customers (many of whom are shareholders) with a better deal on a swanky new phone.
Blimey! Was that a pig just flew past my window?
Hi Graham
Sorry you feel like that. For the record, I won’t get a discount on the Apple iPhone 4 and will pay for it from my own pocket. If you like, I can ask one of our online team to contact you to go through our plans and health check your account. Please let me know if you would like this via our contact form: http://exchange.telstra.com.au/about/contact/
Maybe the pigs aren’t airborne but we’re fitting the wings.
Cheers
Kristen
I don’t go so far as to name my phones, but at home we have Ted the TV and Wilfred the Washing Machine… the fridge has a name too but I keep forgetting it… I suspect it’s Freddie, but that might confuse Wilfred. And the last thing you want is your fridge and washing machine not getting on.
Personally I’d be afraid of using Larry the Laptop to convey your interest in the iPhone 4.0 – Perry and Desmond are already substitutes for many of the things you used to reserve solely for you and Larry to achieve together – like checking your email, Facebook, Twitter etc.
Seeing another funky piece of consumer electronics coming into your life and further reducing the precious little time you do devote to him may be enough to push Larry over the edge. You may also do well to block access to any copies of 2001 a Space Odyssey* from Larry – don’t want to give him any ideas.
*Incidently, HAL from 2001 was made up from the three letters proceeding I B and M… makes you think doesn’t it?
I love that you named all your devices! I’m not quite as imaginative, my iPhone 3G was called Daisy and my iPod Nano was called Pelican (don’t ask). I haven’t named the HTC Desire but now you’ve got me thinking!
I feel the same as you, that I now have this new shiny toy but not sure if I want the iPhone 4 or not, but it’s quite tempting. I’ve signed up for the updates but I think I’ll wait to demo someone else’s in the wild before I’m convinced. The HTC Desire is a fantastic phone though and I’m quite amazed something pulled me away from the iPhone, but version 4 could do the same thing and pull me back away again.
All i can say is that i can’t wait till this coming weekend in Perth for the new apple store to open. So say the flyer it looks like a iphone 4 will be there to view
I have the 3gs after the 3g and can not wait for this! come on apple and telstra
I called my iPhone 3G Wall-E after the characyr from the movie
I really want a new iphone too. when I switch all my services to telstra, i will also get a new iPhone 4.
As for the name, i am thinking, i will name this bundle “NEMO” (short for NEw MOrtgage). i am sure that’s how much it will cost me to be with telstra and have an iPhone on NextG.
Wish me luck.
Hi Litapajar
Let me know if you want someone to contact you to talk through the deals and options with Telstra.
Not sure I can help you with a mortgage broker though
Cheers

I just upgraded my iPhone 3GS to OS 4 and I’m still learning the difference, but it’s mainly positive. The ability to run Skype and mobile similtaneously is a real bonus. I haven’t named my phone but it’s possibly the best thing I ever bought.
I was able to navigate my way around the Margaret River / Albany WA region recently using the Maps app and had great coverage on Next G. An iPad would have been a bonus though to get a bigger screen.
I’ve pretty well converted my entire home office to Apple and Next G broadband so I can take it with me on my photography trips. Shame Telstra don’t have Next G integrated in mac laptops like the Windoze boxes though.
I am still using an 8gb iphone 3g, so I am in definite need of an upgrade. This has become even more noticeable with the OS4 update that has slowed my apps even further. Even SMS now crashes occasionally.
I just registered my interest on the telstra website and can’t wait to hear what offers will be available with the launch.
Kristen,
like you I am phone mad and love all the new apple gadgets, however I have never quite resorted to naming them!
I was thinking you could name your new iPhone after the greek goddess “Persephone” and just call it “Phone” for short!
Yvonne you are very funny. That made my day. Thanks!
Will everyone still be as excitied about the I-Phone 4 (and anything running OS4 for that matter) when you fianlly read the 9999th page of the recently updated Apple terms and Conditions and realise (if you can understand the obscure lingo) – that OS-4 and all I-Phone 4s allow Apple to track you location at any time and collect data about your movements and onsell them to otherwise unspecificed ‘parties’
OrWell was right……at least i can choose to not allow my 3GS to broadcast location Data
Do your research people
I have stuck with a dessert theme when naming my Apple devices. My iPad is Custard [Apple], my iPhone is Toffee [Apple], my Macbook is Strudel and the Time Capsule is Dumpling.
Kristen
You named your phones? Really? And you told us about it???
I have enough trouble remembering passwords – if I had to give each of my devices a name I would need to carry a portable database to remember their names.
What’s next in your household? A burial ground for old technology? lol
Loved the blog as usual
I sorry about your ‘obsession’ with phone technology – and you don’t even have a handle on why.
Do you love it because of the technology? because of the colour? because of the hype itself?
You know, it’s very common for people to become enraptured with the latest craze just because everyone else is. It gives individuals a reason to believe they are part of a wider community.
Most people just have friends.
Aren’t there better things to spend your time and money on?
Hmmm, maybe not.
Peter
Hey Kristen,
That site where you register your interest in the iPhone 4… it does not have a facility for me to register absolutely no interest at all.
peter
Micheal I think you are missing out on a world of fun. Naming your devices allows you to bring them into the conversation like a family member. I am frequently heard to say “Let’s ask Desmond what he thinks.” This is code for “Let’s Google it.”
Also I have a solution for you. Instead of carrying around a portable name remembering device, you could purchase one of these and name it Deidre.

Love the name of your Laptop Kristen. Hey a lot of people name their cars so why not name your window to the 2 dimensional world. I have the HTC DH2 which cancels my HTC Desire for an iPhone.
Kristen never thought of naming my devices but now you mention I LOVE IT …. without further ado I now christen my iPhone 3GS as “Carrie” obviously after my fave fashionable sassy gal in SATC & it carries my life in it’s fashionable, sleek, shiny little body
Hi Kim
I love your name choice! Carrie is an excellent name for your 3GS. That’s got me thinking about my fave TV shows and perhaps my iPhone 4 will be called “Tony” after the leading man in The Sopranos OR maybe “Skipper” from Gilligan’s Island OR “Beaker” from The Muppets. So many names and choices – you’ve really got me thinking in a whole different way now.
Yay and thank you
I’d be interested in getting clear of my 3GS on the Optus contract for a new shiny Iphone 4 on Telstra but would need to know what sort of deal is cut for high end users. I used to be with Telstra until the 3GS came out and Telstra never bothered to contact me for an upgrade (despite registering) and Optus did.
Hi Chris
We will be announcing pricing for the iPhone 4 closer to launch date. Keep an eye on this site or follow the @Telstra team on Twitter for info. In the meantime our Next G Cap Plans represent great options for customers. Our $129 Cap Plan gives users $1500 in included calls, text and more, plus 1GB data. Here’s a link that might help:

Let me know if you’d like one of our online team to help.
Cheers

Hate is such a strong word. You do whatever makes you happy. I’d be interested in hearing what you call your Android. Andy? Andrea? H (making it Handroid)?
Cheers
Kristen
Paul, might I suggest ‘Hemma’? Short for…well, you work it out.

my email is registered for telstra billing, hope you can crack that code and find my number for your consultant.
