Telstra previews its first Android: HTC Desire

We’re pleased to welcome our first ever smartphone running the Google Android operating system to the Next G™ network.
At Barcelona we announced we were going to be the first in Australia to have the HTC Desire, running Android 2.1. While the phone won’t be available for sale until the end of this month, a few phones have arrived in the country.
T
elstra and HTC came together to give journalists a briefing on the new phone and we had 10 phones on hand so those gathered could be the first to try the new phone.
For us, it means it is also an opportunity to launch our first Android apps, Mobile FOXTEL and Whereis Navigator – with White Pages and Yellow Pages coming. In addition to these, the handset also has enhanced HTC Sense user interface which makes its Australian debut on the HTC Desire. New Sense applications include a newsreader app and widget, an innovative seven-screen ‘helicopter’ thumbnail view for quick and easy access to specific screens, as well as a new widget called ‘HTC Friend Stream’ that seamlessly aggregates users’ social communication including Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr into one organised flow of updates.
In fact this social media widget is quite impressive and it really makes it quite simple for you to keep up with what your friends and family are up to.
If there is one other great feature to highlight about the HTC Desire, it is that you can completely customise the phone. This phone allows you to choose what design, apps and widgets you want or don’t want – there really are no restrictions here.
Availability and Pricing
HTC Desire will be available for $0 on Telstra’s $60 consumer Phone Plan for 24 months (minimum total price $1440), or can be purchased outright with a RRP of $779. Customers can also take the handset on a mobile repayment option (MRO) with an eligible plan and pay off the $779 over 12 or 24 months. It is available from Telstra stores and dealers from the 27 April.
Telstra Business customers can also purchase HTC Desire. It will be available on the $65 plan for 24 months (minimum total price $1560) which includes 300MB of data. HTC Desire will also be available on a range of Telstra Enterprise & Government plans from 27 April.

With regards to the Telstra branding and included applications, I have a strong feeling these will be written into the Desire ROM. Alas.
Cheers.
Hi all; I have two HTC desire phones, when i got the first one there were problems answering the phone from the locked mode. One day the phone seemed to download a newer version of the opporating system and its great since. Mt other Desire was sitting around for two months unused. Now where need answers. i put a Telstra sim card in the brand new straight from the box phone and it worked for about three minutes and then did 7 vibrates and went to the Telstra screen, where it stays till you remove the battery. It dosnt respond to the off switch or other functions. After a while put the battery in and it comes on, goes through the telstra screen and onto the code panel. enter the code it works, goes to the web, calls nad recives calls and texts and then the 7 little vibrates again and back to the telstra start screen. im an idiot when it comes to downloads and all that so Im stuck. i tried to download HTC Telstra update but the web page recons both my HTC phones have unrecognisable S/N when I enter them into the box? got the phones from Telstra. any one have an answer.
Hi David, Can you contact me with a contact number and account number so I can have someone call you. Thanks Brendan.
Richard/Brendan
On a previous post, Richard states that “That means if you don’t find our apps or services useful you can simply remove them from the home screens”.
Can you please clarify if the apps can only be removed from the home screen but not from the phone, i.e., cannot be permanently deleted?
Or does it mean the apps can be removed from the home screen AND permanently deleted, making room for apps the user wants on the phone? There is a significant difference between the two.
For one, I know that the answer above will determine if I buy it from Telstra or not.
Hi,
Got an email this morning to say its available, so I rushed on down to Bourke St to get one on the $85 ultimate plan. They told me I couldn’t get it on the $85 plan as I was on their old billing system !!!!
I had 2 options – change my number (which I have had for 12 years so thats not an option) or get it on the $65 plan. I was told there was no way to get moved to their new billing system.
I’ve been with Telstra all my life, and this is the service I get.
I’m not a happy camper at all.
I have the same concern regarding pre-installed Telstra Apps.
An answer on this may determine whether I purchase the desire (at least from Telstra)
There is a thread on Whirlpool that covers the Telstra apps.
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1428496
I would hold off on this phone for a it, seems there is a problem with the GPS not working on telstra branded desires.
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1429739
I pre-registered for the HTC Desire and bought it on the $85 Ultimate plan. The website said it would be free on that plan, the store I bought it at said it would be free on that plan, but now, 2 weeks later, I get a letter saying that I have to pay extra for the phone because I am on the $85 Ultimate plan.
All references to this initial deal are taken off the Telstra website and when I call Customer Service they deny it ever being there and that the store offering it to me must have made a mistake.
This is clearly BS since a simple Google search reveals several sites referencing this deal (free HTC Desire on the $85 Ultimate Plan) including TEx page http://exchange.telstra.com.au/2010/04/21/htc-desire-launches-today/
What is going on?
Hi Carl, I’ve passed on the exact details of your complaint from this comment and you should get a phone call today or tomorrow to sort this out. I will monitor this for you and ensure you are contacted. Cheers, Brendan.
Hi Carl, Just heard you got a resolution to your issue. Glad this was sorted out quickly for you. Enjoy the Desire.
Brendan.
I had better not get a letter about paying an MRO for the Desire handset on the $85 Ultimate Plan. I bought it direct from Telstra online and it was definatey NO MRO (had to pay MRO if remained on $99 cap plan). But in the past Telstra has advertised on it’s website that the $150 Ultimate plan included MMS and video calling and then reneged on this. They did however have to eventually let me out of that contract. THEY PROMISED that MMS and video calling are included in the $85 ultimate. Anyway I LOVE my Desire with one major frustration. Why is the Telstra version insistent on not using voice to text (voice dialling, speech synthesis). I have tried to install it from the market (just won’t install) and then downloaded the apk file on my computer. When I tried to bluetooth the apk file to the sd card it told me the target device forbid the object. What is the deal here?? The lack of voice controls mars this nearly perfect phone!

Hi Brendan
I hope you can sort this out. I even have a marketing email from Telstra that was sent to me because I pre-registered. In it it states that I will get the phone for free on the $85 Ultimate plan.
You can view the email here: http://telstra-marketing.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/telstra_marketing.cfg/php/enduser/doc_view.php?1=AvUG~wpFDP8SZGK~GiEe~yL~Jvsq~2f~CORNFzr~
You have my email address. I hope to get a response today in writing sorting this out.
hi, i was wondering if i buy the desire outright and use it on another network – optus in my case.
i’m a telstra user and about to resign. my gf wants this phone so i was planning on getting it on the plan and let her use it.
can i unlock this if it aint working on other networks
Hi Ivan, The HTC Desire is not locked to the Next G network. However, important to note that on our model runs at 3G speeds on the 850Mhz and 2100Hhz bands. Next G Network runs on 850Mhz. Customers can also access 2G coverage on this model via the 900/1800/1900/850 MHz bands.
Cheers, Brendan
I believe I’m in the same situation as Carl. I bought the Desire after registering and receiving an email about it on the 21st of April. I signed up on the $85 new ultimate plan to get it for free, but when my bill came I found I was being charged an MRO. I called billing and they said I’d have to go to the store to fix it. I went to the store at 8am today and they said they can get it fixed but they’ll need to call billing at 9am to sort it out, and that they’d call me at work after that. The store called me after 9am to confirm that it can be fixed, but billing says I need to go back to the store to present my ID. And after that, an Early Termination Charge will appear on my next bill. When I receive that I have to call billing again to get them to remove the charge.
Is there not an easier way?
The phone itself is brilliant and I’m very happy with it. Although I do wish the new cap plans had come out before the phone, as the new $79 cap would be perfect for me.
Hi John, Sorry to hear you’ve had hassles with the $85 Ultimate Plan. Although a pain, sounds like you’ve got the issue sorted. If you still encounter problems let me know and I’ll see what I can do. Cheers, Brendan.
Brendan thanks for your reply to my earlier message, the update to install voice search (and fix the GPS) seems to have fixed the problem. Although still waiting for the notification to Desire customers on the update
Today I called Telstra after deciding that 8 hours (standby only!) battery life was really not good enough for my Desire. I was told on the phone to take it to a Telstra Shop (I did make clear I had purchased it over the phone). After a 50km drive to the nearest Telstra Shop not only was I told there was nothing they could do for me, I was told I made a mistake purchasing the phone over the phone, that had I bought it from the Telstra Shop they would have looked after me and then proceeded to show me the new plans that are immensely superior to the plan I have just contracted to for 24 months (as sold to me by the email I received as a pre registrant) and told me I would’ve received those plans had I purchased from them. They advised me to return the phone and cancel the contract and start again with them. When I rang MSC it was very unsatisfactory both in regards to my battery life and the plan I was on. I was told I cannot cancel the plan because I am not a new customer, so once again penalised for being a loyal customer of over 20 years standing. After reading the blogs about the new plans I rang the renewmobile number and was told I couldn’t go onto a new ultimate plan but could go onto a new cap plan if I paid $69 per month contract exit fee!! Unfortunately all my excitement and passion with the new phone has been overshadowed with an extreme feeling of being exploited with the pre registration program. Had I waited a week rather than support Telstra on the launch of this exciting new droid I would have been substantially better off. It’s not like these new plans are little bit better! They are MASSIVELY better and I will be resentful for the 2 years I am contracted to the old one.
Hi Katrina, just read you comments and sounds like you have been lead up the garden path, try going to the telecommunications ombudsmen, and they will investigate, or go to consumer affairs, Hope this helps. Cheers, Peter
Thanks Brendan, I went back to a store today and they seem to have sorted it out now.
Looks like my issues will be more than satisfactorily resolved. Which is really postive because I can now concentrate on LOVING this sexy phone. Sorry I meant useful, productive, functional, nah, sexy covers it all
Is there Exchange support on the HTC Desire/Android?
I am very worried….I was going to go and get an htc desire tomorrow in store at telstra…was very excited…was going to contract to 2 years…but appears that this phone is only for metro/large regional areas?? I am in a regional area and need next g for all those areas 3g doesn’t work…will this phone work ok in the country?!? Although I don’t live in the desert, I do travel often to areas that have absolutely no 3g coverage and only 1 or 2 bars of reception…help!! (i am on the verge of shattered right now!)
if i happen to buy the htc desire from the telstra shop outright, can i put an optus sim in the phone and use the internet and mms and what not? really want this phone but have been with optus for far too long to let go of them. i know you have previously answered this question, but i didn’t understand the information about the mhz of the phone
thanks
Hi Leanne, as far as I understand Telstra’s Desire is suppose to work on its NextG 450mHz band. You should just go into a Telstra store and talk to a sales rep.
It’s a great phone! I hope it will be good to you also. Cheers.
thanks nat.
just wanted to update all – i took the risk and got the phone. sales reps in telstra said it should be ok even though website says only for metro and large regional. reception is NOT as good as my nokia – i get no service in areas of where i got one bar with my nokia. but those areas are very rare. but all in all, reception is still up there with next g – ie i still have reception 50km out of a regional area. that reception is good enough for both phone calls and browsing.
because the phone is just SO NICE i am happy to have a little less reception in trade off for a beautiful phone that has everything and JUST WORKS. i am used to the odd drop out anyway (cause i am with telstra!! lol) and that is about the extent of the reception problem in blackspot areas. no big drama.
i almost went with the xperia as it is marked as rural and remote but i had a play around with it in telstra and it is considerably slower and seemed a lot more disorganised to use.
i am sooo glad i got the htc. i wouldn’t trade my htc for anything. no regrets! just do it! it is an awesome phone!
Hi Leanne, I’m glad the Desire is working out for you. I have no regrets with mine so far.
There are two apps (both free in the Android Market) I’ll recommend to make your Desire better. 1) Advance Task Killer, allows you to easily close down apps (this will safe you battery life as apps tend to run in the background). 2) Astro File Manager, which gives you info on your files and disk usage for both internal and SDHC card. Most importantly allows you to backup your apps onto the SD card and then restore them back onto your Desire!
Hope you have a long and good relationship with your new acquisition! Cheers.
Yes, I’m feeling incredibly betrayed by shabby marketing.
Love the phone to peices & it works a treat on the network…BUT..and a big but.
I moved from another mobile provider to Telstra’s $85 plan soon after the launch. One week later, or thereabouts, a raft of far superior Telstra plans were released with much greater valueand far better and sensible (given the capabilities of the phone) data allowance.
In good faith, and feeling chirpy, I ‘bundled up’ ny services and moved my mobile, internet and Foxtel from other providers to Telstra and have a home line as well.
Like Katrina, the gloss has faded in a second and next time round, I’ll be an extremely hard-to-retain client.
It’s ok if you’re well into a contract, but when the thing’sonly been released for a few weeks….HELP!!
Be nice to receive a little good faith back.
Credit to Telstra where credit’s due.
Brendan and the team were on to it in a flash, so I’m now a happy chappy. I received a concerned phone call which resulted in a no-fuss and seamless transition to a far superior deal.
The love has re-entered the building.
Many thanks.
hey guys,
just wondering what kind of battery life you’re getting out of this phone/supposed to get? i am lucky to get about 8hours out of the phone, not to mention the phone heats up like crazy when im playing with it for more than 15minutes… please reassure me this isn’t normal?
thanks
I am not a happy chappy either. Went into a T-life store to view the phone and chat plans etc. Thought I would be better taken care of that way. However, had the fears about the reception etc but was told “it should be ok” that if I had bad reception I could bring it in. The catch was it was Friday 2pm and the shop shut at 5:30pm and I had a 1.5 hour return drive to work to test it. I was told that if I bought it online they honoured the 7 day no-reception full refund period, but T-life shops only had 24 hours! (??!!). Since the next day was Saturday and I had to work and since I didn’t have another day off for a long time I had to try it. I was so worried about reception and getting it back before 5:30 that after I signed the contract I didn’t think to ask for a copy of the conditions. I originally went into sign for the $79 cap plan with free phone and $750 of calls and 500mb. But I was told I could downgrade to the $49 but it would be $12 handset repayments, but I could go back up to the $79 at any time and it the handset payments would not apply anymore. (I was also told that by a rep by phone a week before). So I went the $49 and thought I would absorb the $12 but go up in to the &79 that I was actually after in a few days (just wanted that safety net in case money got tight down the track). The lady also sold me an extra data pack of 1 GB for $19. It wasn’t for a few days later I realised the receipt I had been given that day did not outline what was covered in my cap. I went to T-life and spoke to the lady who sold me the phone (NOWHERE near as sweet and polite as she was before she sold it to me!) and asked her for a copy because I was confused about my plan and i thought i should receive a copy in writing. She got stroppy and told me she couldn’t because telstra provide them. I told her that it was a contract and I had a right to know the details of the contract for my own peace of mind and security (my reasoning provided shortly). She printed me up a general terms and conditions and told me she couldn’t give me printed details of my contract (??!!). She told me it was all on their computer and that is all telstra needed to do. I realised I wasn’t getting anywhere with her, so thanked her for her time, but asked her if she could upgrade me. Then she told me that it was going to be $79 PLUS $12 and that $12 stayed there no matter what! I told her that WAS NOT what she had told me (and the other rep!) and not what I signed up to. She told me she had signed me up for that. She then told me she had signed me up for a business plan (which she had told me at the time, but had not mentioned the extra MRO on that plan, nor given me the choice). I told her why would I want to be on the business plan when I can be on the consumer plan for the total of $79. She told me the business plan has better data rates. I left the shop very frustrated and disgusted at telstra. I committed to a 2 year contract worth almost 2 grand, I am sure I have a right to have a copy of what is included. Every other phone contract I have signed has provided this. The lady gave me poor and incorrect information but I have to just deal with it because i have no copy of a contract! Crazy. HTC Desire? I love my phone (even though it is having many drop outs now!) but I give up on telstra! I had just taken my phone line with them and wireless for my computer and both of these contracts were just as disastrous and I am still chasing up hundreds of dollars I have been incorrectly billed for under contracts that were verbal (phone) but I have no proof.! HTC Desire but Telstra Crap.
Hi,
I’ve been having problems with my htc desire phone and Telstra cable. Basically, my wifi setup at home works fine until I connect my phone over wifi to use the internet. It connects fine, but then next thing I know, my cable modem (supplied by Telstra (Motorola SBG900)) reboots and basically kicks off all devices connected. The reboot only occurs when I connect my Desire. I have tried everything (eg static IP, DMZ etc) and googling shows that there are many others out there experiencing the same exact issue. Telstra support hasn’t been of any use as they advised that there is no problem with the cable modem and that instead it may be a setting on my phone as all other computers/devices connected to the cable modem has no issues. All I got was a phone number to call another department. I beg to differ with this so called ‘resolution’ as I am able to connect to all other wifi routers/modems with no rebooting problems. This problem ONLY happens when connecting to Telstra’s cable modem – Motorola SBG900 modem.
I think it’s pretty slack that the Desire which is exclusive to Telstra isn’t being supported properly by Telstra bigpond cable. It may be a simple fix of just a firmware update for the cable modem, but alas the only support I got was to go call someone else for help. Thanks guys!
My beautiful experience with my new phone is otherwise basically marred by Telstra’s lack of support.
- Annoyed
Hi everyone,
I seem to be having the same problem as many of you. I have a Motorola SBG900 modem/router and whenever the HTC Desire attempts to utilize the Wi Fi it reboots the SBG900.
Every work around fails including channel/NT settings etc. If I leave the Wi Fi turned OFF on my Desire – the modem and home network all work perfectly but the second i introduce the Desire it reboots the SBG900.
I’ve logged 93 minutes of calls to Telstra support and keep circling around with no answer. I am finding numerous threads about this specific hardware config. problem but as yet have not received an answer. The phone works on Wi Fi hot spots and other carriers and on other modem/routers just not the SBG900. I’m trying to find out if there will be a firmware update from Telstra or can they advise which of their more recent modems is compatible as I’ll upgrade if necessary though i’d rather not.
Regards,
NIL
thansk guys I think I will avoid the htc desire
but what smartphone can you get that does nextg in the bush? or do we await one
Whats the go Telstra? I wanted to buy the HTC desire from the Hurstville store and was informed they dont sell it ouright! I was told only the store in the city sold outright
I have exactly the problem with the Wi-Fi connection. I am on Telstra cable with Motorola SG900 modem. Just got my HTC Desire yesterday. Tearing my hair out as everytime I connect to Wi-Fi through my phone, it resets the modem. Tried all means but having no luck so far after sacrificing many hours of sleep. Feel like a zombie now. Telstra, do something please as the Desire is your product.
I am having the same problem with the HTC desire and Motorola SBG900. Has anyone found the solution?
I have the SBG900 and the HTC Desire – same problem, same frustration. No answer. Disappointed. Come on Telstra, this needs a resolution ASAP.
Add another one to the list Telstra – I have a HTC Desire and a SBG900 with Bigpond. I will be going to my Telstra shop tomorrow for a replacement phone or Router!
This is just typical isn’t it. I want to know how much data on a standard Desire plan purchase and I wan to know how much internal storage, (eg, iPhone 16gb), and NEITHER of those things are in this so-called review. Are you serious!
Why does Telstra continue to obscure basic data about its products?
After much frustration, my wifi problem with the rebooting SBG900 seems to have been fixed!!! I’m so excited
I happen to have an imported Desire from the UK and have just updated to Froyo 2.2 which seems to have fixed the problem. So far so good, no rebooting modem router
(Froyo is officially being rolled out from this week onwards for European handsets that aren’t carrier locked… so I guess it’s up to Telstra now to update their ROM as HTC has configured Sense to work with Froyo)
I set a pattern password on my htc Desire. I forgot it and I cannot enter my phone. Is there anyway of getting into the phone now?
Try here Tamara. http://www.htc.com/au/support.aspx
I received my HTC Desire last Tuesday when I signed up to a Telstra on the $49 24month cap plan in JB HiFi (porting my number across from a Vodafone prepaid cap). When I initially signed the contract the salesgirl gave me a voucher for a coffee shop nearby and said it would take half an hour for the contract to go through and my Vodafone number to be ported across. One hot chocolate later I arrived back at JB where the girl told me my number couldn’t be ported immediately, but to expect it would be done by the time I woke up on Wednesday morning. Wednesday morning; nothing… Wednesday arvo I gave JB a call to check what was happening. They got back to me saying that since my Desire purchase (unluckily) coincided with the release of the iphone 4 it meant that Telstra was overrun with contract applications so things were taking a little bit longer than usual “but expect it to be connected either later tonight or by the time you wake up tomorrow (Thursday)”.
Thursday; nothing.
Friday; nothing.
Saturday; nothing.
Sunday; nothing.
Monday; nothing.
Tuesday (today); nothing.
And in that time my (unfailingly polite) inquiry calls have been bounced from Telstra to JB to Vodafone and back again… And again and again. Apparently it’s everyone’s fault but whichever company I’m speaking to at the time.
So currently I have a Desire which is unconnected to any network (hence virtually useless), as well as my old Vodafone nokia (on the number I have been trying to get ported across to Telstra) which has run out of credit. I don’t want to recharge with Vodafone either seeing as technically my number could be ported “at any moment”. Yeah right.
I’m really frustrated by this service from everyone, but particularly disillusioned with Telstra seeing as how I have just signed up to this company for two years. And on top of that I really agonised over the switch because in leaving Vodafone I sacrifice free Vodafone to Vodafone calls.
I’m going into JB first thing in the morning, but seeing how Brendan has helped a few people out here I was wondering if he could do anything for me.
Cheers
Good day Laura. Sounds like you’ve had a really rotten experience. I’ve just sent you an email. Please reply when you can and I’ll get someone to call you and sort this out once and for all. Thanks. Brendan
Thanks Telstra for the crappiest customer service ever. I see that several people have requested for help with the rebooting SBG900 modem/router wifi problem with the HTC Desire, including myself. Yet no Telstra employee tried to help out until the latest comments regarding signing up to a Telstra contract. Only when you’re taking our money that you decide to take an interest…
Can someone help my PC does not see my HTC I’m trying to sync my outlook I have downloaded the software but it does not see my phone
any chance of telstra following vodafone’s lead with releasing a vanilla froyo update? see:
http://thenextweb.com
Hi
Is Telstra going to release a Froyo update for existing Desire customers? Will buy one now if it is.
Is Telstra going to release a Froyo update ??
Have to agree with the last 3 posters (who are yet to see a response)…
Are we going to see a Froyo update anytime soon?
It would also be seen as ‘industry best standard’ to ensure the vanilla Froyo update is provided, with the option of users able to install the Telstra apps they like to their choosing (not tied to their OS).
Using such an approach would mean less work for Telstra per release, and end users could have a phone that had bugs/fixes in place immediately from the manufacturer.
Failing that – you are forcing the hands of end-users to root the device and install a stock Froyo build.
I recently swapped all my services over to telstra; home phone, internet and two mobile phones. The only problem I am having it trying to connect to my wireless home network with my htc desire. The modem tells me it is connected, the phone says it is connected , but in reality it is not connected to the internet and you cannot brows any web pages.
I have rang telstra technical support, only to be shuffled between departments and eventually hung up on. One lady, after continually putting me on hold for half an hour to “check her resources” came back with the solution that I plug an Ethernet cable into my home phone ….. what this has to do with wireless access for a mobile I have no idea.
After recently returning to Telstra now that their prices are competitive I have been quickly reminded of why I left in the first place ….. the crap customer service. I am just glad that I only changed my home over, not my business as I had intended to do.
I love my HTC Desire on the Telstra network, but I cannot handle having Telstra apps pre-installed that cannot be removed. People who by a HTC Desire want to customise it and that includes removing unwanted apps and the ability to change settings to suit their needs.
Having the phone pre-installed with Telstra stuff is ok BUT it must be removable. I will not buy another Telstra product again without first checking online with others that Telstra branding can be removed. It is unacceptable and something the Telstra Shop people do not tell you/or claim ignorance when approached about these issues.
Telstra, make sure the next upgrade to the Android ROM for Telstra HTC Desire users allows the apps to be removed. You will gain more users if this is done and not loose others already with you.
I want to uninstall the useless preinstalled Telstra applications but cant get help from Telstra.
Well i seem to be having a different problem with my desire. The screen will stop turning on. The light flashes to tell me i have recieved a message or a call, so i know the phone is still on but for some reason my power button isn’t working. My screen also freezes up sometimes. I was wondering, has anyone else had these problems or is my phone just dodgy?
