Once again the press is buzzing with comments about 3D glasses - still no clear view (pun intended) if your can use your Brand A glasses with 3D TV Brand B, and so on. (Refer to Channel News article today : http://www.channelnews.com.au/Display/3D_TV/P7D2N3W3).

So if you are rushing out to get a 3D TV with its 30 frames per secon shutter working overtime in frontof your eyes, make sure you have some friends with the same brand or forever be a solo viewer.

An interesting news item today from Channel News (http://channelnews.com.au//Display/3D_TV/A9L8B9K6) reporting that the new Samsung 3DTVs will require special viewing glasses that could cost over $150 each. That means a family of 4 would be up for and additional $600+ to view their new TV - already slated to carry a premium of $400 over existing flat panel models.
Being battery operated (and not available for small kids), this supports my earlier concerns that it might not yet be the technology to have in your loungeroom if you intend to have friends come over and watch a movie. A trip to the local cinema might still be the cheaper option at this time.

Great write up Michael, I've really enjoyed being able to read about CES from your perspective and it has me thinking about a little annual leave myself next year. Imagine what products may be showcased then!?
Off to suss out the cocoon range online right now, thanks for the tip (oh my poor Visa card).

Hi Michael, from what I understand the glasses are just polarised lenses so should work between sets. As anyone who's seen Avatar in 3D would know, these glasses are only $1.50 so I don't see the issue. Certainly I imagine the feature can be turned off if you invite 10 people to watch a movie and don't have enough glasses (I can't remember doing this in the last 20 years).

Hi Keith. Thanks for your comments. I have also seen such a screen - but it seems the technology is such that the glasses option has won out. Its now up to the manufacturers to come up with a standard and a method of handling the glasses issue.

Reuben, just to set the record straight. No one sent me to CES. I paid my own way, airfares, accommodation and all other costs, and took annual leave from work to do it.
Now regarding ebooks - i happen to enjoy having a room (or several rooms) full of books - that do get referenced when the urge hits me. It doesn't mean I want to carry all those bookcases full of books around with me wherever I go. If I needed some information there and then, I can do one of several things - search online, call home and have someone look it up etc. If you own an iPhone or iPod, do you have your full video library stored on it and take it everywhere you go? Probably not.
Whilst shopping online is great, and I do it a lot (including several times today already), I also enjoy the experience of going into a store and actually touching and feeling the product I am looking at.
I have been looking at several ebooks over the past 48 hours - the Kindle, Nook and Sony Reader. Chances are I will purchase one this week - to give it a full workout before I cast my final judgement (again with my own money).

Hang on, so you cannot see the advantage of removing 17 bookcases worth of books from your house, reading in the bath (with a zip lock bag) and downloadable books with no trip to the bookshop required, but you like a iPhone skin. I will hold my judgement, but it sounds like they sent the wrong guy to CES.

Hi Michael - looking forward to having you back - the TEG channel needs you !
I do remember seeing a prototype 3D TV on a customer visit to a media agency (identity confidential) a year or two back. You didn't need glasses for that and the 3D effect was sensational - I wonder what happened to that technology ?
See you soon
