Telstra extends social SMS service with free Twitter alerts

Today we’re launching an exciting new two-way SMS service for Australian Twitter-ers who are also Telstra mobile customers.

In an Australian first, you can now sign up to get free SMS alerts for all new Twitter updates and to follow friends.

Plus, by simply sending an SMS message, you can also update tweets, directly message other users, retrieve profile information and nudge or invite a new user. This will be charged at the standard SMS rate as per your Telstra mobile plan.

Today’s announcement follows on from last week’s Facebook SMS launch, which allows you to receive free SMS notifications whenever friends update Facebook, including wall posts, comments, invites and messages. Users can also send a SMS to reply to a notification or create a new SMS to update their profile, at their standard SMS rate.

For more details, take a look at Twitter’s official blog.

Telstra customers who are Twitter members can activate the new SMS notifications service by texting “START” to 01980 89488 (01980 TWITT).   SMS charges apply.

More information about SMS alerts from Twitter is available at: www.twitter.com/devices.

    Hi,
I cannot get this service to work while using my blackberry bold 9700. I take the sim out of the blackberry, and put it in a ‘normal’ mobile, and I can text to twitter, but I can’t text to twitter from blackberry. I get message “Short message transfer rejected”

I have the same problem. I was able to SMS GO to twitter, but now I get the “rejected” message. It also happens when I SMS 19 numbers. Anybody know what’s going on here??? Telstra keep telling me my phone is unblocked to premium numbers (I never asked for it to be blocked). HELP!

I also can’t use my Blackberry 7290. What’s going on here? Why just Blackberrys?
