Nokia MD shares his top 5 for 2009

blog_nokia

What does the boss of Nokia Australia and New Zealand think are the best tech products or strategies for 2009?

  1. Nokia N97 – The Nokia N97 is our flagship mobile computer for 2009 and offers instant access to the full range of Ovi services, including the new Ovi Store.
  2. Mobile Virtualisation – There’s been so much buzz around server and desktop virtualisation but I think it’s mobile virtualisation which is really set to change the smart phone market. This new technology will see the end of app developers having to create different versions of applications for different operating systems.
  3. Comes With Music – Launched in Australia early 2009, this online music subscription model is unique and has changed how people discover and enjoy music. The service gives people with a Comes With Music mobile unlimited access – for 12 months – to more than six million tracks from the Nokia Music Store catalogue – on Nokia! And best of all, it allows them to keep all their downloaded music at the end of the subscription period.
  4. Amazon Kindle – This much anticipated eBook reader finally arrived in Australia in October. Although initially sceptical of the Kindle’s success, its features and apparent ease of use has intrigued me. I’m looking forward to trying one out.
  5. Windows 7 – Windows 7 is the operating system we’ve all been waiting for since Windows Vista.  It’ll be interesting to see if Windows 7 lives up to the consumer hype that’s been building in the lead up to its release.

Interesting… a few comments from me (I’ll probably do my own top 5 too)

    1. Nokia N97 – Wow.. listing your own device as #1? Credibility will be hard for the next 4!
    2. Mobile Virtualisation – Agreed on this, since VMware acquired Trango, I was excited to see hypervisor go mobile. Enabling RTOS and Open OS to run on a single chip while maintaining QoS is important, if this gets the the way of UX it will fail dismally and lead to poor adoption. The benefits are there though no doubt! Variant Management along with Convergence of Enterprise connectivity and Personalization are 2 BIG benefits.
    3. Comes With Music – Another Nokia product/”innovation” in your top 5?? Agreed on the sub model and cloud computing for music (I host my collection on S3) but unless carriers 0 rate the data or have large data plans this kills the distro model. Pervasive/fast and value based pricing via a 3rd party carrier is key to this succeeding. The bouncing ball isn’t in your court or under your control which makes it difficult. With cheap memory, NAND flash and SSD dropping in price and size rapidly this may also be a concern for you?
    4. Amazon Kindle – Yea, I get this device, however I prefer their auxiliary apps so I can use the service via my own devices (iPhone, Tegra etc)
    5. Windows 7 – Its the O/S I’ve been waiting to see after their market failure with Vista. Still prefer Snow Leopard ;)

    Interesting to see that!

I would have to say Mobile virtualisation. Is CEO not IT driven. It’s not going to work well because of physical issues with different devices and as html 5 takes over everything we will only need a web browser to run apps. Virtualisation is good for one task server consolidation.

N97, I get that he would say it’s in the top five but I it wouldn’t even make a top 50 in my books.

Comes with music…. um really! again it’s good but it’s not going to be pervasive!

Amazon Kindle: IT’s three years from a “Real” device it still looks like an “in development” unit.

Windows 7… Used, uninstalled it and lost the DVD and that was the free version! So much for will run on anything the Laptop was top of the line five years ago!

    Top tech is easy

Android, Pico projectors, true Wireless at real prices, competitive SSDs and….. netbooks! It was going to be the year of ssd but it turns out it was the year of the netbook!

    and 2010 or 2011?

plus any news on Nokia E7 coming to Telstra (if yes hopefully not at an inflated price point :) )
