"Its just another channel" is in the end true. However it is a channel like no other, and marketers cannot turn it on and off they way they can others. There is a frenetic exchange of information, comment, linking and marketers are well advised to do some very serious listening about their products and brands first, before 'being there' just because thats what everyone is doing.

Thanks Keith,

You raise some good points. In particular the point regarding exisiting processes. I agree that new processes are justified if a solid opportunity exists that can't be supported by exisiting processes.

I'd propose this would vary on a case by case basis.

Mike -

You asked the question: "How should a corporation assess if social media is right for them?" I believe that the question should be more like: "Why would a corporation *not* be using social media (or at least planning for it)?"

Social media has the potential to change how business operates - and is already doing this. Your first two points make sense; but if you force your social media to align with old processes, and your competitors are changing their processes to match the new environment, you risk losing your place in the market. Similar thoughts apply to culture and risk.

Things are changing - this blog platform itself is one symbol of the change! It's not just the technologies that are changing the game - it's the environment of openness and trust that the technologies support.
